Any of you guys using Compiz Fusion? (re-fork of Compiz & Beryl (Beryl has been discontinued)) http://www.opencompositing.org/

Used to use Beryl so I know compositing does some pretty cool stuff, but installed Compiz Fusion today.

Few things that are ooking really nice so far - cube & expo reflection and the screensaver! You can have the windows you have open flying around or have the cube rotate.

Here's the Ubuntu Compiz Fusion HOW TO if anyone needs it: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=481314&highlight=compiz+fusion

Few pics.

You mean the Compiz Desktop Effects that come with Ubuntu? They're s**t anyway mate, they were even buggy for me and I'm using a 256MB Geforce 7900.

yeah the ones in the system > preferences> desktop effects (i'm still wet behind the ears when it comes to linux lol)

they seem to work as it zooms and sort of spins on a cube

That's an extremely cut down compiz, I believe they wanted to include the most current stable compiz version when they released 7.04 but time was against them, so they did what they could.

If you install it properly, you get a rather large settings panel:

Only got Ubuntu on my laptop atm which has crap graphics so it won't even enable the desktop effects but it does look cool, didn't realise Beryl had been discontinued though.

From my understanding...

Beryl came about because some of the Compiz developers had differences of opinion, so they forked off and started Beryl. Recently it was decided to merge Beryl back into Compiz and rename the project Compiz Fusion.

Some of it is a direct rip from OSX, as always.
But, from what I've seen, they've gone a bit further and there's some really good features now..

Don't use it tho.. now a Vista user on my laptop and XP on desktop :rasp:

KDE functionality, with GNOME looks.
I've been saying it for YEARS!

KDE works really well, GNOME looks a million times better, heh.

Altho, not sure what it's like really recently.. I don't have a monitor on any of my Linux boxen :rasp:

KDE4 should be released later this year (I think?) should be interesting.

Personally I don't think either one looks better than the other, they can both be customised to look pretty much the same anyway.
