Locking Tools Required for Cambelt?Aux Belt Change on Clio 182, West Midlands!

  RS 182
Hi all,

Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I can get the correct locking tools required to do mentioned job above and a rough idea on price. Or.... Is there anyone near to Cannock that has some that they would lend for beer tokens or perhaps sell if not required?

My friend of 25 years experience in mechanics has carried out this job a few times on his customers 182's before without the correct tools however I am insistant that I obtain the correct tools as I want to ensure eveything is bang on!

I am getting all original parts from renault at trade price including dephaser pulley which is why my friend is going to do it as I know the specialists on here wont fit customer supplied parts.

If anyone can help thank you in advance!

You can bodge it using three elastic bands, an 8mm drill bit and a half eaten Jammie Dodger, FYI.

like Fred@BTM for instance, he did my absolute bodge of a job, and has ran perfick for the last 2k miles

It's true what Fred said. I done mine myself, after buying the tools and parts it didn't work out any cheaper. But then if you can get them at trade prices it should be.

I think the tools cost me 160.

If you haven't already bought the parts, trust me, save yourself a lot of hassle. You're in Cannock(?), Fred's in Birmingham, it's a no-brainer!
Even if you have bought the parts, sell them if you can and get it done properly.
Mine was done by the garage that I bought my car from, I have a 2-year warranty and I still had him check it for timing.

I cant believe if I can get parts at trade prices and do the job myself it wont work out cheaper. These specialists must be doing a great deal. Whats sort of price am I looking at with Fred?

So what sort of cost are we looking at with Fred? I do deffinately want it done right and I have full faith in my friend who has done 182's without the locking tools and none of those returned with problems. I only insisted on locking tools because I want everything perfect for my car.

Don't get me wrong If i couldnt get trade prices on parts, didnt have access to a garage with the choice of 3 ramps and thousands of pounds worth of gear and experience then I wouldnt attempt and I would go straight to Fred.

i'll break it down for you

you buy the parts trade, for example we'll say the following prices

cambelt kit £100
aux kit £70
dephaser £160
oil and filter £30
seals £25

total £385, lets say you get an incredible trade deal on top of normal trade, for arguements sake we'll say £300 in parts (unlikley but hey)

6 hours of labour on top of £300 of parts plus the tools

and i charge £650 all in, it would cost you more getting your mate to do it, plus if something goes wrong i doubt you'd get anything back out of your mate?

Fred you seem to have a point when you break it down like that! Its probably just because im in a different position. I am paying nothing for labour. It is a favour for a favour....

Although after all this i am still considering calling you this week ;-)

don't take it as i'm drumming for business, i have cambelts coming left right and centre at the moment, roll on my holiday!

but if your mate is doing them without the tools i 100% promise the timing won't be right, the only reason they haven't come back is because the car will still run fine if its only slightly off, but you'll be missing 20bhp

Thanks for your advice Fred. Appreciate it. Will weigh up my options and my head over my wallet and will decide what I am doing.

Cheers
