Looking at buying a Clio 1.8 16v

And you'd be right in your assumptions.

The fact of the matter is, ANY standard valver in ''reasonable'' condition will get humped by ANY standard 172 in ''Reasonable'' condition. Today. Not 5 or 8 years ago.

All imo of course.

I said original condition, not reasonable condition. There is a difference. If you dont understand that difference try an online dictionary.

FS gay as f**k who wants one of those ratty old slow sheds nowadays anyway ? ;)

(Apart from Daniels, I love his.)

Like i said, pumps would not fail on a good engine, You had a dog. No wonder it was slow. Hardly fair comparing it to a newer car is it?

If it was mint it would have won a concours award. Id say at best it was average.

People overestimating their cars worth - Brad's fourth law.
It would have won one yeah - if i'd have taken it along to a show, but I didn't, so unless they are going to come round my house with an award, I don't stand much of it getting one.

It was mint, you haven't seen it - you don't know. You can tell me it's crap as much as you like, I don't care really, I know full well that it wasn't. If it had of been rubbish, i'd not have sold it for the price I did & it would have taken ages to get rid of.

It was slow with the lower mileage engine in it, i've said that quite a few times now.

Pics of the engine bay and under the arches please. PM me if you like.

Yeah i never mentioned mileage. I said in original condition. Ie on low mileage AND in 100% working order.

Low mileage engines can be broken too you know? Sounds like yours was.

God you're a sad fucker, shut it and accept that they're all spider ridden rust buckets apart from Cats which was f**king well mint, engine was a total peach shame it was so slow though. ;)

So to recap for the opening poster. Yes valvers are good cars, and in reality on a road or track, the driver makes the most diference and so there is nothing between any of the renaultsport cars as long as you buy a good original example of any of them.

As for tuning, they are hard to tune without spending a lot of money on them. Best to avoid engine tuning unless you have lots of spare cash. If you get one just enjoy it for what it is.

I don't have pics of the arches & bay etc. I sold the car years ago now.

Yes the low mileage engine was probably a bit knackered. It was quicker with the original 90k engine in it.

Valvers aren't renaultsports, unless you can provide proof that they were made in Dieppe or carry the RS logo anywhere ? :rasp:

Its funny how a 172 with 90k is "just run in", but a clio 16v on similar milage would be a bone shaker about to blow up.

Having owned a 16v, a 172 and a 182, I can safely say that a 16v is a great car to get to grips with some performance. 7.7 to 60, so thats less than a second slower than a 182...so in real life, a cars length at a traffic light grand prix - big deal, I could live with that.

The only issues with a 16v is reliability and the rust. Find one thats already had a new lump dropped in it and you could be onto a winner.

I have a soft spot for 16v's, and would love another one...

I would suggest that the OP goes over to the Clio 16v forum and gets a less snobby response.

Contradiction much??

I'm far from snobby about 16v's mate. But the original poster sounded like he was getting excited about 137bhp and 7.7s to sixty. I was merely trying to point out that for £1000-£1300 (his budget) he would be disappointed.

Fiesta Zetec S is another good shout. Not particularly fast but an awesome chassis providing it hasn't been lowered using £20 springs off ebay.

Welcome to CS! lol. They'll be asking for pictures of your sister in a minute.

Its all just banter. Stick with it, its the best car forum on the net!!

Yeah contradiction, that was the whole point of the post...

I would get quite excited about that performance from a 1.8 engine! Its great how people who point out how cars will do 60 in 0.8 seconds quicker, thats fantastic if you are a racing driver, but your average joey wouldnt really see that much benefit. A car length or so at some traffic lights...

Of course for £1300 he could find other cars, such as a pug GTi or VTS, but they are also old cars with their own problems. If he went over to a VTS forum they would probably tell him £1300 isnt enough aswell. For that money he wont get anything mint, but if he wants cheap fun then out of the cars mentioned, the 16v wins everytime!

Valvers arent too bad really given their age etc but if your in that kind of budget maybe have a look at a 200SX S13. I picked mine up for £550 and it has been endless fun since, if your looking at a fast car for that budget though expect it to go wrong imo, old cars have faults you need to be aware of this before you jump in, trust me.
