Maxogen - Are they really worth it?

I'm considering getting a Maxogen for my 172 which should push the power output past the 200 bhp mark, however are I'm entierly convinced that i want to spend £360 on a glorified air filter. Comments from existing or previous owners would be great, otherwise I'm gonna stick a 'green' filter on and be done with it.

I've got one and like it, but it didn't cost me £360, only £150 (second hand).

I wouldn't have forked out £360 for a new one.

  phase 1 172
search it theres loads of discussions concernin this wiv loads of opinions bout power output etc

Was one of the first to have one on here...Stunning bit of kit, i converted people from the crappy Vipers and such like!

Gains....emmm....mayb a few GG's! Coupled with your mods and what you've spent so far i fail to see why your quithering over the price...

Great sound, 5mins to fit...Well worth the money i paid for mine...(Wasn't full price)

You could always use a ph1 airbox with a panel filter and CAF. Pretty much the same but less bling.

Very true, however i'd describe the reaction from the threads I've read so far as 'mixed' regarding the value for money of a maxogen. Its also interesting that the 2 users twho rave about it also didn't pay the asking price either.

^^^ i'm not raving, all I'm saying is I have one, never ever tried anything else (i actually only went for it because it was the most expensive thing about, so i thought it must be the best!)

Agree'd! I'm scotish!! - In other words tightfisted! I'd barter till i was blue i the face... I paid 400 for maxogen, AWT inlets and a decat...Not bad! ;)

I had one fitted when I had my exhaust done.Seems a lot more responsive but that could be because of removing the cat.I am also getting better mpg.:S

I had one and sold it on after a long while, I had it running with a de-cat and was only impressed with the sound really? Chucked it in for an ITG panel filter and have been satisfied with that especially in the hot weather. I ran a 15.047 iirc with the maxogen & de-cat at santa pod in the heat. The car must be properly re-mapped as I had my car rr'd and had a dip on both power and torque curves near 6k I think?...

If you have the cash, they are the best money can buy, but it is a lot of money. I don't know what mods you already have, but if you are pushing the 200bhp barrier then you must have spent a fair whack on your car already, so there is probably no reason to skimp on an IK. If you can pick one up 2nd hand, then deffo go for it....

They are well made, a bit of a bugger to fit, but look better than the other kits imo. I would however be interested to see one of these kits line up with the above reccomendation of a phase 1 airbox with an itg filter & a decent coldairfeed.

....plus no real performance gain unlike the Maxogen :S

You wont find a better IK than a Maxogen in terms of build. Performance is only slightly better than a Viper (from my experience which both were set up fuelling wise after fitting)

Key factor is that no matter what IK you buy, if its not a Maxogen you'll always be left wondering if you could have squeezed just that little bit more out of you car with just a few extra pennys spent. :)

I'm happy with mine, but same as Ali I never paid full price. At £300, and considering the comprehensiveness of the kit it comes with, it was worth the extra over the Viper. But at £360?? Not sure.

If I had my time again I'd have a panel filter and sort out a decent CAF. But the Maxogen is very good..... and it looks lovely.
