Media Streaming and Encoding

Questions...questions...

Can anyone tell me how quickly a dvd can be encoded to xvid these days on decent hardware?

Reason i ask is that i'm loosing patience getting my library onto my media streaming server and am looking for a faster way...currently i encode using the works laptop (turion 64) and its almost in realtime but i've got about another 300 discs to get through so its very time consuming, esp as i rip to the HD first!

Am i going to get much better or should i just to up the capacity on my media server and go with transcoding (using TVersity) from VOBs so i can keep the existing EVA700 reciever and 54G network?

I calculated it all out and i'd need about 2TB if i did raw dvd backups using shrink etc!

Help!

I've used things like DVD Decrypt, DVDX and Hanbrake. They don't take too long - 30mins on modest laptop?

all to AVI takes about 20minutes...you're storing vobs? prob encoding at high bit rates will be better with minimal loss of qualityl. i'm storing mkv files which are massive too athough i've just decided when i run out of room i'll start deleting
