mk1 172 shift light

apparently there is a shift light on the mk1 172. I can see the little warning light on the left side of the dash. How do i get it working?

From what i have read early cars had them working and also came with aluminium bonnets. Where as older ones like mine they didnt get the aluminium bonnet or the shirt light.

There isn t a shift light on mine either. [ Y reg 2001 mk1 ] its a real pain when giving it some welly.... You find youve got one eye on the road and the other on the rev counter!!.......spoke to the dealer about it and all they gave me was an A4 piece of paper telling me it had been discontinued and would be available on next 172 [mk2] with the F4R 736 engine.....dont know why though.........never heard about the alloy bonnet thing before.

March 2001 it was discontinued according to the piece of paper Ive found by Reno.......probably couldnt be a**** to fit it!! ;)

Not one on mine either ... tho I do have the aluminium bonnet. Y plate registered March 1st. Time for a MOT then :(

Ive got a very early MK1 with both Aluminium bonnet and working shift light. Dont feel too bad about the light....its not much use. Only time you can really see it is at night, and its very small. Also, its more a reminder to change gear rather than the "optimum" gear shift point.

I do like the aluminium bonnet though, its amazingly light. When looking for the car it was a "must have" feature.

My first mk1 was a jan 2001 and it had neither the shift light or light bonnet. The mk1 i have now is a dec 2000 and it has the shift light.

Ive got on on my Mk2 172. As Rhys says, its more of a reminder that youre fast approaching the limiter, as opposed to an optimum gear change indicator. And its right in the corner of the dash. Ive only found it useful when my car has still been a little cold:oops:, and the rev limit is lowered - the shift light stops you from getting caught out and bouncing of the limit at 6500(ish)rpm...

thanx for that guys, much appreciated. I thinkll ill just leave as it is. I thinkll ill get a magnet out tomorrow and find out what kind of bonnet is fitted.

The only reminder I get is when wacks off the rev limiter and aint very nice either.......like i said ive got one eye on the road and the other on the rev counter which can be very off putting when your trying to play with other cars.

Does anybody no the weight difference between the aluminium and steel bonnets ?.........and why did Reno change to the steal bonnet ?

When I go out tomorrow morning Im going to check to see if Reno bothered to put the 2.0 engine in as well !! :(

LOL!! Even with the shift light, you still try and squeeze out that extra few hundred revs before changing. And I have hit the limiter a few times.

Mine is a 2000 X plate with Aluminium Bonnet and shift light

Got to admit still dont go off the light to change gear but its a trick bit of kit!

For standard

The shift light disappearing coincided with an extra exhaust emissions sensor being added.

A number of things changed arround the start of 2001 for cost cutting, no alloy bonnet, no alloy spare.

Mine was October 2000 built September, I think one of the first non silver ones and has alloy bonet & shift light. Shift light is nice, I use it, adds to the fun when going for it, bonnet is super light compared to a steel one.

well found out that mine is an aluminium bonnet, which is a nice surprise, It was registered in jan 2000, and thankfully has just flown through its first mot. Last time i looked under the car when it was up on ramps there was only one exhaust sensor fitted.

dont see why you need a shift light tbh dont you have ears you should know what the car soudnds like at each point :) that way its much safer and makes you better at driving it

also its only there to tell you to change before you hit the limiter nowt to do with optimal points

its just because its a feature the car has and its doesnt work. Its like the annoying light switch in a house which just sits there. It operates nothing but you feel it should. I can see the little symbol sat there i just want to see it light up.
