Mk1 Clio Hybrid 172

Hi.

I have a Mk1 Clio Hybrid 172. I have a problem with the aux belt coming off. The garage has told me this is because the power steering pump has been removed only leaving the alternator to take up the slack.

Have any of you guys had the same issue and if so how did you resolve it?

Are you using an alternator mounting that allows tension to be set? Or have you just removed the power steering and air con pumps from the original brackets?

To be honest i'm not sure. I have only owned the car for a few weeks in which time it has been in the garage having the dephaser and cam belt done. Since i picked it up and drove home the battery light came on and the car started to overheat. On inspection i saw that the aux belt had come off running alternator and water pump giving me my problems. I spoke to the garage and he said that he had noticed the pumps had been removed and that he was hoping that he would be able to get enough tension in the alternator to keep the belt tight. I'm sure he said he had to take off the alternator then do the tension of belt and then fit alternator while trying not to loose tension but i will ring him and check exactly was done.

I have been watching your vids by the way...your build was A+++ Are you trackdaying this year? Got oulton park booked for the 16th Feb if i can sort this issue out...lol

Wrong brackets by the sound of it. You ideally want some from a Cup so you can set the tension manually. Guessing you bought the car already done?

You'l need the right length belt also. There are other ways of doing it, like using Mk1/Volvo brackets with the right alternator (usually a lot cheaper than cup brackets).. There is quite a bit on here about those

I have just spoken to the garage and he says the belt on mine is running the water pump and alternator and nothing else. Power steering and ABS removed. The alternator is on a fixed style bracket. Would it be easier to get an adjustable bracket for the alternator and tension from the alternator? He also confirmed that the belt is a shorter one than normal.

Cup setup has a PAS pump in it, so might not suit what you want anyway and still leave you needing to mess about with it.

Get us a picture of how its been done, it might even be running your water pump backwards etc depending on what they have done with re-routing it.

I might not be able to get a picture till thursday/friday when i get the car back up to the garage. He recons a adjustable bracket on the alternator would probably do it or maybe a spring loaded tensioner in place of one of the fixed one's???

Sounds to me like the wrong bracket set up also.
I had a similar problem and later found lack of tension and the alternator was slightly angled due to the tensioner being 2mm short.

The alternator bracket on mine is the fixed type so u cant put any tension on the belt using the alternator. I think it should be an adjustable bracket.

This is my engine with a renault 11 (I think, I can't remember 100%) alternator bracket.

A/c and power steering removed as the engine is in my mk1 like yours.

No, the gold bit (said renault 11 bracket) is slotted, so you tension it and then tighten it.

Ive got a home made setup on my mk1, but thats similar, its just a case of loosening a bolt, move the alternator, do it up. Lots of older cars were like that from the factory anyway, it works just fine.

Cheers, I have similar design for mine but would like an adjustment rod incase the bolt comes loose. Retro fit the Cup threaded tensioner??

My mate has something like you mention. He has also deleted ps and Ac.

If you search storm grey 182 in the projects section, there's a picture of it. Only cost him about £20 off eBay.

That wont hold it if the bolt comes loose anyway realistically, you'll have far more load on the tiny little 8mm or 10mm nut on the adjustment rod than you ever had on the 13mm one holding it tight to start with.
Just do it up properly in the first place.

It really wont give you backup mate, the pressure and vibration on it is far too much for that little nut to withstand.

So while it wont do any harm, but I would be amazed if it actually does any good either, you'd be better off selling the cup setup IMHO and buying a locknut, lol

Lol, I'm just being safe as poss. I have that setup I have pictured, flanged serrated nuts FTW then.

But its such a small little thread, its like being worried your wheel nuts will undo so cable tieing the wheel on too, lol

Not quite but that could be said for rear pads. Between engine vibration with race mounts and general abuse it will get when raced, it wouldn't be the first belt I've had come of with that design, fiesta did it monthly. Difference with the Clio is it could be tattles for the engine or race over.
