BrandsHatch 27-2-15

First trackday of the year was a full open pitlane day at brands yesterday organised by Javelin, we'd never done a javelin day before but it was organised very well and everything seemed to run smoothly throughout the day.
Had a slight delay in the morning due to us accidentally leaving the handbrake on the trailer when we put it away last year, cue my dad dragging it with seized brakes 2 miles to our house lol! Was a freezing cold morning but by the time the sighting laps were done at 9 the sun was shining and the track only had a few damp spots remaining. the car was performing brilliantly all morning and really seemed to be in its element on the more confined circuit of brands compared to the long straights of snetterton.

Then my temporary fix on the oil line from last time failed and it started to drop a small amount under the car just before lunch. We decided the best bet was to ditch the cooler completely. so after removing the mocal plate and plugging up the radiator we got back under way, sadly the old filter just couldn't get a good seal onto the block and it continued to trickle out down the engine. For the good of the engine and the other people out there we decided to call it a day at about half 2.

Despite this easily fixable problem it was a really good morning and the car seems almost perfect now, brakes were spot on, handling great and no major issues (touchwood).

A few pics from the day :)

Being the start of 2 weeks off work and feeling super motivated I was up early yesterday to fix the oil cooler. Decided I would remove the radiator to make it a lot easier on myself and my arms and at the same time I'd finally fit the new header tank I bought months ago.

Bonnet and bumper off ready to go! Must try and come up with some sort of bumper quick release system.

After fixing the oil cooler we booked up the RenaultSport track day at brands hatch on 9th of April. Had a really good day and the car performed fantastically again, sadly we were still getting a slight oil build up on the bottom of the sump towards the end of the day. Turns out that the sump gasket has gone on one corner and oil is seeping out slightly after prolonged hard driving. So once again an oil leak needs fixing before the cars next outing.

Some pics from the day

The car then sat on the driveway while I thought how best to tackle the sump and when I could be bothered to do so as its not the easiest on a narrow driveway where I need to park the 172 also.

In the mean time we had been on the look out for some kind of unit/barn/garage we could rent or buy that would combine trailer storage with space to work on the clio, while out driving about for work I happened upon this sign.

17467220903_2735e6da30_z.jpg
IMAG1478 by terry clarke, on Flickr

Went back the next evening to enquire and was offered the perfect place at a very reasonable rate. Its not quite 2 cars wide but wide enough to get a clio in and move around it freely, around 12 sockets running down one wall, barn style doors large enough to reverse the trailer in with the clio on and the unit is long enough for around 4 cars. Its also in the kind of location that nobody is going to go nosing around (note caravans lol).

Back down the yard this weekend to carry on with fixing the leak in the sump. Stopped off on the way to pick up the trailer from storage and move it into its new home, will be much better off inside as the weather has rotted the boards pretty quickly, doesn't help that some idiots jumped on it by the looks of things!

IMAG1536 by terry clarke, on Flickr

Once the clio is back together the trailer will go in the far corner and we'll be moving the bench etc to divide the place into two areas. Also to our amazement we managed to get my dads T4 hightop in, that'll make putting the trailer back in easier when the car is still loaded.

Had a bit of a self made nightmare with the sump (pair of morons we are), removed all the bolts, studs to the gearbox and gave it a thump and it wouldn't budge, kept at it for ages before realising we'd missed 4 bolts in recesses at the gearbox end lol. So now ive got to go back on my day off and finish it off after wasting a day scratching our heads!
Thank god we can just leave the car in this state now and come back to it at our leasure.

Week off work this week and the weather is grim so I'll be cracking on with the growing to do list for the Clio.
Main job is going to be sorting the interior loom out and moving all the window controls etc into the centre console.

Popped down the garage today to stick the battery back on and see if it's still running ok after being sat since August, fired up on the first turn and ticked over in its usual aggressive manor .

Then got distracted by a friends newly acquired ph1. Changed the pads, added a Fabia splitter and the wrestled with the rear wiper for longer than we planned to trying to remove it lol.

Driving over there in the ph1 made me miss driving a Clio a lot!

  Clio.
Looks good that little car..... Unit look brill!
The rollcage is the one from Mark Fish's race car, last time it was in his car was at a support race in Monaco I think. It was in candy metallic red originally.
My old girl (the blue mk1 hillclimb car) is here living in France with me now, also my hillclimb 172 swam the channel recently, so filling up my place quickly.

Spent another day down the yard today working through the jobs list.

Car had sat since august so swapped out the plugs for a fresh set and fired it up :grimacing: started on the first turn pretty much and ticked over lovely and lumpy for a while. Didnt spot any new leaks or anything so hopefully the engine side of things is all good, even let it see daylight for the first time in months!

The next major job is to sort out all the wiring inside the car as lots had become obsolete lately and it was pretty untidy and a pain to use windows etc last year. All random switches will be moved to one central location where the stereo used to be, this means door looms coming out and being chopped and moved to power windows and stuff.

Both seats were removed and the front half of the cage to allow the dash to come out and i need to paint the footwells and put down some fresh griptape.

Got some more bits done this weekend in between work. First job was to fit new aerocatches to the bonnet, when i first fitted them I bought some cheap ebay knock offs and you get what you pay for! So we fitted some genuine ones that feel 10 times stronger and are a much more complete piece of kit. While the bonnet was off it also got some weight chopped out of it as its on and off quite a bit.

The tailgate was also stripped of its loom as the car has no central locking or rear wiper so that was redundant, the only thing left in the tailgate is the latch and lock so its very light. We have some spare pins so may look at pinning it and cutting out the inner skin.

More weight could come off that 😅

25939579395_be4aecc159_z.jpg
IMAG1238 by terry clarke, on Flickr

Then we got started on the main job for the weekend which was moving the various switches around the dash into the centre and trimming the looms of any excess wire. Was a pretty straight forward job with just some extending of wires needed to get power back to the window motors.

Drivers door loom plug reversed and stored in a speaker recess.

Dash is now back. Also fitted the new sabelt wheel and lowered the steering column roughly 10mm, that combined with the smaller wheel gives a much better driving position and view. Took the car outside and gave it a drive around the yard for a bit, my left leg has become weak from the auto daily lol!

Got some hammerite mixed up in light grey to paint the footwells before the cage goes back in, then decided that I might as well do the whole interior while im there. Still got to pop the side windows out to finish around them and give some places a second coat, looks a lot brighter and should make finding dropped bolts etc a bit easier.

Had no idea that homebase could mix hammerite instore

While sorting through the many tubs of clio spares in the shed at home i found a few rare gems of the 16v/Williams world...

The lesser spotted gearbox drip tray

And the even rarer OE brake coolers, normally found at the side of the road after falling off.

While cutting them out we also fitted the windy window mech to the passenger side. It was going to be a lot of effort to sort the loom and keep an electric one and it barely gets used anyway, this way saves some weight too.

Cage is back in, seats are back in. Interior is all back in apart from the new door cards which will be done this weekend. Pretty much set for CSF in a couple of weeks.
Drove it outside and gave it a quick wash then had the trailer inside to sort out some new boarding for it and my brothers vitara for various little jobs.

Just got to put the doorcards in and give it a few more test drives when its quiet and then put the track wheels on and itll be ready for Blyton. After this the bodywork will be getting sorted as my neighbour is going to do the sills for us when he gets time.

Bought a second hand set of H&Rs for the rear, cleaned them up and fitted them this weekend. Also removed the rear bumper and arch liners for the first time since Ive owned the car (8 years I think), surprising lack of rust but a lot of dirt built up in the liners.

Gave the rear a clean up and paint, removed the exhaust and heat shield too so I could treat the boot floor and give the shield a lick of paint.

That's just a handful of the old things dotted around the place, the guy really likes keeping hold of stuff lol

Cars looking good.
This is what I have done for quick release on the front bumper, I was using cable ties for years and gave up with that idea.
