Mk2 172 oil leak....!

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Just after advice really, Small leak from between sump and gearbox.not much, but enough to start worrying i think.!

a, is this a common fault?
b, Is it just the sump gasket leaking?
or c, much worse crankshaft tail oil seal.Which will knacker the clutch as well. And if so can you get to it with the gearbox off, or do you have to drop the crank out.

Would not mind but the car has only done 34k with one lady owner. o well thats french cars for you.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Cheers

Never heard of it before and you want to pray its not c. I've just had to replace my gearbox input shaft oil seal and the clutch and getting the gearbox off is major fun and I would imagine the 2.0l is worse.
Same thing, it shouldn't happen to a 3yr old car on 28k, especially seeing as clutches and oil leaks aren't covered by the warrenty i've got.

They can leak its not common though realy.
Sounds like the gasget seal has faled but check its not oil coming from elsewhere.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah looked all round and if def from gearbox/sump location. So say you can replace it from the gear box side.? do you still have to take the sump of to replace it.

Fingers x,d the Clutch is holding is own so far.

Bummer is i've just spent £500 on doing the brakes on the thing.

sump gaskets do go, and so do the crank seals (occasionally)

Leo's went and knackered his NEW alcon paddle clutch

Not yet seen the inside of this thing yet, So question is do i need to take it in complete bits eg start with sump off to see whats what. Then if its the crank seal, gear box off.
Also is just a seal to replace or is it a bearing end main cap off job.

i'd start buy just changing the sump gasket, bit of a pig of a job

if it is the crank seal you'll need to remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel to access it

So off with the sump then. Then i,ll have a look.
last time i had it up in the air i could just see the back of the flywheel/ringgear and theres no oil on there so hopefully just sump gasket.

If its more than that, Does anyone to a lighten flywheel and back plate and a good clutch kit...?

Thanks for all the advice by the way.
