Mk2 Turbo Conv, and other bits

  Clio 1.6 RXE
Hi guys,
i'm pretty new here so take it easy ;)
i've tried searching for my answers but couldn't come up with anything solid.
so here goes...

i drive a '98 plate 1.6 8v RXE 3 door.
it is a pretty nippy motor for round town etc but as we all do i would like more power.
now i can't afford the 172 turbo conversion, so thats outta the window.
so was looking at something like a 5gtt engine.
whilke searching i found the volvo option aswell..

:::can both options be done on a mk2 ph1?
I think i would prefer the volvo engine as availability is better and belive they have good potential.

:::What would happen with the likes of ABS and PAS??

:::What would happen with regards to MOT... i.e. emissions test (new car, old engine)

--------

ok so thats the engine bit.
now, also on my searches i found a thread about the 'Autolock' feature... from what i can tell this is on higher models like the 172/182... is this a feature that could be activated on my model?
We all know how there are some 'hidden features' just waiting to be unlocked from the dealer :)

hopefully you guys can help :)
Best Regards,
Baz

for the auto lock, get in the car door shut, engine on, hold the lock button down near ur cig lighter for 5 secs

i like it! :)
thanks!

btw, what does this actually do... does it lock the doors when a certain speed is reached? or lock them if they are left unlocked for a set period of time?
thanks!

Best drop a 172 engine gearbox etc in instead. Slightly less power than turbo but more economic and more relaible.
These facilites arn't hidden on none 172/182 all the cars have them. I don't think your's will though as it the previuos phase they facilities only came in on the new shape cars.
The volvo engine is good as you can pick up whole cars for very cheap the 5 engine is more popular so more tunning bits out there.
However the stock ecu can only run 1 bar boost then you have to upgrade to stand alone etc where the costs go up.

Both engines will fit though.
Wiring would be a challenge. ABS well you can get rid of it and run a normal setup or just fix it up and run it.

MOT wise your car is tested on the age of the engine so if you have proof (label on the block will tell the tester the engine age etc) then they test to the spec for that age car.
Your cars runs a hydrolic PAS system most converts either go to a manual rack (or disconnect the piping) or get an electric rack from the diesel (since its a bigger engine and got in the way so electic was the only option) and run it like a radio etc.

TBH the Volvo engine is a shite platform to go with.they are only 120bhp. and the have a air flow sensor which doesnt help.
Why do you want forced induction? Plenty of power can be gained from the 1.6

well, if i'm honest i would just love the turbo... lo (sorry but i'm a typical young lad)

what kinda power gains could be had from my current 1.6 then?
and what would you recommend to get them?

r5 gtt engine is good but if your used to all those mark 2 clio modern thingys may want to steer clear. its not the most practical engine shall we say when its tuned due to its "old skool" carb setup. ie dont expect it to start 1st time every time, it doesnt like the cold doesnt like the hot, doesnt like to idle, fuel consumption is poor. you would have to ditch the powersteering unless you can work how to run an electric power steering pump and if you have aircon that will go as well.

if none of that matters to you then r5 gtt engine is awesome and my clio (tho mark 1) is awesome to drive with it. :D

You have tunning potentila from the 1.6 but its expensive.
Stick with normal tunning of cams head work throttle bodies (or custom maniofold (not easy throttle bodies are the only realistic way) and thats £5k or so gone and you'll be pushing on for 160hp.
Best check for insurance the 1.6 16V engine is a better stariting point although head work is more expensive also you'd be best going to a 172 gearbox for extra strength (£800 or so fitted).
There was a company made a supercharger or turbo kit for the 1.6 16V engine £6k or so unfitted it was 170hp I think it was TUV approved hence the high cost.
Best go with the Volvo engine there little extra HP but more torque and you get the noise.
You could get a 1.8 16V engine fitted and turbo it there pushing 230hp or so.
£3k for the kit say £4k for the fitment of the engine and kit plus you've got more future options.

sounds to me like there isnt much on for your car mate. my advice would be to save and get a better car as a starting point, as soon as you start doing engine conversions things tend to get expencive very quickly. can pick up 172's for not to much now and you would get the added benefits of better suspension brakes etc. same sort of price would get a s14a 200sx. both cars have better tuning potential and would be a better starting point.
or if you dont mind a bit of old skool and got your heart set on a renault can get a very nice r5 gtt for that money
