MOT run out dilemma.

Hi guys,

My mate is visiting Northern Ireland and his MOT ran out yesterday. He tried to book it in over there but they won't take it unless he registers his car at a address over there.

He is back in a week. Does anyone know his legal position. If he calls a garage back in Scotland and books it in would this be sufficient or could he get in trouble for driving it back next weekend.

Cheers D

havent the foggiest what the score is in NI... but my guess over here would be that he would get a court appearence if he got stopped as the car is not legal. you can only drive a car without an MOT to and from the testing station....

If he books it into a testing center and drives it there from Northen Ireland I guess that would be ok then?

nah, it would be a hard case to say that was reasonable..... to drive from NI to scotland for an MOT.

I think it may say local MOT centre....

He may have to book it in so he can drive off the ferry and straight to the closest test centre!

How long has he been in NI for? He can't drive to Scotland as his car is uninsured and a judge might suggest that he should have gotten the MOT done before he set off for NI given that he knew it would run out during the trip!!

I'd get it into a center as soon as he gets off the ferry...

I think you can book it in at any MOT centre and drive straight to it. I got a car from Birmingham to Barnsley by doing that, got pulled and they said that was fine.
