MR2 crash at Brands

As far as I'm aware, both drivers are in hospital with neither having life-threatening injuries. If this had happened at a meeting with a big crowd, such as BTCC, I think we'd be looking at multiple spectator fatalities...

Eh? The fence stopped the red one in it's tracks. There was no fence where the black one went over...

How the hell?!! And yes, the black one went straight into the car park lol...

I can understand going off at Paddock, but they hadnt even got all the way down the main straight!!

Wasnt their another big crash earlier on in the race as well?

Did the red one have a mechanical issue? Otherwise he just clearly pushed the other guy off in some sort of kamikaze move! They were both going way too fast to ever make the corner, just look at their speed compared to the others around them. Bizarre...

ouch! Very scary, as said if it was a busy day there would have been plenty of spectators in the path of the black one.

On a big raceday there's normally loads of people milling around outside there.. good thing it wasn't!

Motorsport is safe. It's road cars on roads which are dangerous... :rasp:

I do not mean at all to undermine the intent of your statement though.

Ha Motorsport is safe!!! Hmmm not so sure about that, but that's what I tell my old dear when I do trackdays. On the track you wear helmets, everones going the same way and there's no trees to hit.

Hope the guys in the crash make a full recovery!

I believe it's officially debris fencing, there is no such thing as car catch fencing in UK motorsport, the structure would need to be huge.

A fast moving tyre is the limit of the fencing generally used (the Quarry fence at Combe has absorbed a wheel/tyre moving at about 70mph), if it manages to slow down an entire car that's a bonus.

Looks like the black/red car (escapes to continue round paddock) nudges NSR of red car, driver of red car is passenger as he collects black car and they're both sent careering toward the tyres.

Pretty huge by any means, some of the stills of the aftermath show that roll cages do their job!

Only just seen the photos/video of this. Frankly a scary scary crash. Which can only make the catch fencing worse at Brands.

What scares me is that the spot on the stone blocks at 3/4 secs which the black car bounces off is a very common place for photographers to shoot the start shot. If one had been stood there he would of been toast.

Brands hatch has been so so unlucky with big crashes lately but also so lucky that there have been no spectator casualties.

The black car also lands in a formation/spectator area. On a bigger event the black MR2 would of been sticking out of a burger trailer.

I was there, it was a horrible incident to watch. The whole place went eerily quiet. Everyone could see the Black Mr2 clearing the fence so you were left guessing if anyone was killed or badly injured.

Having walked past the exact spot the black Mr2 landed on 5 minures before, I'm counting myself lucky.

Motorsport IS dangerous.

^ Bold statement.

Maybe it would have been wise to insert "relatively" into my post. HOWEVER I stand by my intent (if not my wording):

We are lucky to be able to enjoy motorsport with such a high safety standard. Just look at some of the WRC & F1 crashes from the last 15 years - yes some are heart stoppingly horrendous but I for one appreciate the engineering that results in so many drivers being able to walk away.

There are probably hundreds of horrific accidents I could cite where it beggars belief how effective the rollcage/safety cells are these days
