My ‘forgotten’ Clio 172 Cup

I bought this years ago and parked it in the unit and decided to forget all about it.
fast forward to Christmas time and my car collecting life changed direction and I decided to just sell it along with most of my ‘buy and forget’ collection. Only one left now (The Volvo) but I’m not selling that.
I sent it to the best place round here for a good sort out (big thanks to @lemonnobby for his amazing mechanical abilities and Prestige Valeting & Detailing for the top job cleaning it!)

New injectors
Cambelt kit
Water pump
Dephaser
Bottom pulley bolt
Aux belt
New Alternator
New (ish) shocks - only 6m old
New (ish) springs - again not that old, think they’re Apex??
Wheels refurbished
New rear brake compensator
New washer pump
New number plates
Standard radio
And of course a Skoda splitter

Topped off with a proper deep clean.

Whilst all this was going on a member on here messaged me and asked if I knew of any nice cups for sale..... It’s now provisionally sold pending me delivering it on Sunday. I’ve never even driven it! 😂

thought I’d chuck some pics up as it’s actually a really nice example and it’s nice to see a relatively standard Cup nowadays. Still a really good looking car 18/19 years on!

I don't want to gazump the other guy but I've defo got £1500 sitting here for that....

Looks Bob on, and I bet it's solid if it's been tucked away all that time. I could ruin that in no time at all.
It’s really REALLY good underneath.

My mate mentioned above restored a trophy from Scotland. Should have seen the underneath! Was like a pre-war Iron gate that was found in the sea! 😂😂

My mystic blue VR was the same 😬

😂 then stick it on eBay with s**t pics and a wanky description and leave it on there for about 5 years. The ad must include the wording ‘future classic’ and ‘wants for nothing’
That last part properly winds me up.

I’ve never EVER seen a clio that wants for nothing. And I used to work for Renault selling them brand new! 😂

God that looks good Dan. I pined for a cup when I was 17 and never got around to owning one.

I think we’ve got another 12-24 months until they go mental price wise. There are very few nice ones left and people will be holding on to them until the prices go up, then they’ll end up like the 205’s and R5’s.

*Car is no longer for sale*
If I get there on Sunday and he doesn’t want it for any reason I genuinely won’t care. It can go to the back of the showroom and left there.
It’s funny, when it was in pieces I just wanted it gone but now it’s all clean and back together, it really won’t be a problem if I have to keep it. 😂

Sounds like you want him to hate it 🙃
I’d prefer it if he bought it. The money needs to go in to my kitchen renovation fund that I obliterated buying the Sierra and the VXR8. 😂😂

I’m not sure I can hold my wife off for much longer. “A couple of weeks and we can start looking dear!”

I’ve had about £400 in that account since I bought them. The balance is not going to go back up on its own and I can’t afford to top it up at the moment. 🤦‍♂️😂

I do wish I had the means to store stuff like this. I had a mint cup and regret it but life moves on and I had zero storage space for it

Im sure you’ve done well out of it but so will the new owner. Absolute stunner!

Having owned both years ago its a tough call now. I loved my 172 cup and would have another at the drop of a hat (if i had the funds) I had a 2 year old one from Renault, so much fun to drive and abuse and felt a lot nicer (though id still like one) than my ph1 172. Raw light and special also better interior and such. I really liked my Trophy too, I mean it was a Trophy.... but when anyone asks about it all I can describe it as is a full fat 182 with Red paint, different suspension and option recaro seats. More special as a build/type of car than actually for driving pleasure in my opinion. In a sense the OG 172 cup had a lot of time put into making it a cup chassis car even down to thinner glass, where as the 182 Trophy was a bit of a cop out by Renault where they just threw some bits at it.

I think this proves that OEM+ is the answer.

I'm aware this appears to be standard, aside from perhaps a set of springs and probably an exhaust as most of them fell off before delivery mileage was complete... But we can't see that anyway.

Looks superb. Which is a surprise as Daniel's photography skills are usually Jacket Potato.

Definitely better than some crusty old Sierra anywho 👀

Pics he didn't even take. He hasn't even seen the car finished yet.
I'll have to get some pics of my cup on here I think as thats low mileage oem+

Would love another 172 Cup, was thinking this week about a Cup or a 182 Trophy for a weekend car
