My 1.4 is being cack on petrol

I dont think im getting the mpg my car should be doing. Heres information for you to help me work out why.

I dont rag it
Red line it
Ive been using shell fuel
It seems to be doing an average of around 300ish miles to a tank which is utterly cack its not a 2.0L
I dont generally drive stop start around town.
Even when on the motorways doing 75 80mph it stil shows 33mpg.
I put red ex in the tank before ifilled up last time and got 340 miles when the fuel light came on and it was averaging 37/38mpg. This time ive done 220 miles and its showing a quarter of a tank left. and hasnt really moved above 34/35mpg

Surley a 1.4 16v should be alot better than this? Anyone know how i can sort this out

i get 48-50mpg in my 1.2 16v, do a bit of stop start driving but nothing to write home about, more traffic lights than traffic from driving to and from work.

i should be getting about 430-450miles before the petrol light this tank, using shell v power...

not sure what it could be, does sound quite bad...
last time i reset my mpg as i started a 50 mile motorway journey at 70 it was doing about 55mpg..

Hmm well im gunna see how it goes if i get around 340 ill be happy but others have said theres is cack so oh well. Im also gunna run it on v power and see if i get any difference. as for servicing i think it could do with a full service but theres nothing majorly wrong with the car so im not sure i can justify spending 150-200 on a service. I wanna get it colour coded lol.

Check the tyre pressures, take out extra weight, ensure the brakes arent rubbing and that all the bearings are in good nick and give it a service!

i had my car at these and they always looked low, so put front to 36 and rear to 35 and it transformed the car, mpg instantly went up and didnt feel like i had lost any grip etc...

my 1.4 was pants as well... the 1.6's seem much better. even though its the same engine essentially.

Gunna whack another tank in maybe today or tomorrow, might v power it if i can aswell n see if that makes any difference, checked my tyre pressures theyre fine. Hmmm

When I had my 1.4 Dynamique I was getting roughly between 28 & 32 until i went on the motorway for any decent distance. Tyre pressures were always checked recently.

Getting around 22 -23 in the 197 now

what the donald duck,ive got a 1.4 and never get below 42/43 and then it goes up to bout 46/48 on a longer run,had 52 once but never saw that again??

How many miles yo get to a tankful kev? and when do you fill up, as soon as the light comes on?

never check the miles to a tank dave, but i usually just fill it up when iam down to the last two segments,and just flick through the comp to see what iam getting m.p.g ,the next time i fill up i will keep a record of what i get to the tank and post it up,

I've just got 133 miles out of my 1.2 16v on a full tank. But thats cos it's F**ked getting it sorted soon. Sounds like its drowning and very sluggish out of junctions.

I got some better results when i put red ex in the tank but they wernt amazing, but better than they where...

If its still under warrenty get it back to the dealer, its a common problem with the sun roofs and theres a modification available to the handle. Had it done to mine and it never made a noise again.
