My 172 Cup, first time owner

Hello all, been on here for a little while scouring the ads and threads for as much info and banter as I could stomach. I've wanted a 172 Cup since they first came out and tonight, I picked up my very own. She's sitting outside and I cant help but keep drawing the curtain to look at her! Totally standard, pics to follow tomorrow as I plan a mega cleaning session! Im south east so any meets coming up gimme a shout!

Welcome to the Club mate.

Get some pictures for us all to look at tomorrow. Any mods planned ?

Sam!

Cheers guys, love the M.Blue! Well as for mods, not really sure. I wanted to find a standard example because to be honest, I think they look perfect as standard. Perhaps some cheeky under the bonnet stuff though. Was lucky and found one that had refurbished Turini's so Im happy with those, but thats not to say I wont get something else to put on for the track in the future. Was having a look through all the history over some beers last night, intially I thought the cambelt needed doing next month. However, its on '03 car had its cambelt plus aux belt done in '08 on 26k. Am I right in saying its not due again until 2013 or 60k whichever I get to first? (probably 60k as its on 51k right now) In which case, a 12k service will be booked in next month hopefully with JMS.
Cheers

Exactly mate, even tempted to do a similar thing as the 'project showroom' cup, was a really nice one that. So got some pictures up before the clean..

Cant really tell much difference. Was a bit grimy, had been cleaned but not properly cleaned i.e. full polish etc.

Cheers mate, been waiting so long to get one. Went to see loads then settled on this one. Needs a service though, so gonna get on to the boys at JMS.

Yes keep it o.e. I've had 2, search if you want some inspiration ;)

Hi,

Looks like you've found a good one there.
I'm on the look out for a nice standard un-abused 172 cup, what sort of money should I expect to pay for a 40 - 50k example?

Cheers

gaz-kev - Mate just had a look at yours and must say it looks every bit of the word 'mint'! Mines not quite that good..yet! Need to get the side strips sorted and bullets. Initially gonna hit them with some tar remover as there is quite a bit. Seen a lot of people have removed the black felt under the bonnet, why? Also, got this very light ticking which I understand could be the dephaser, is it a bad idea to continue driving the car? Gonna get it sorted asap mind.

lee5505 - To be honest mate the best advice I can give you is read up on as much as you can until it makes you sick. The more you know the better especially if your looking at private sales. I saw about 6/7 cups in total, ranging from 40k - 90k prices from £2300 to £4000. If you ask most people on here, I think youl find people are out for a bargain so dont be surprised if they say a car is priced to highly. I think if you want a standard cup you can find them with 40-50k for a decent price. There is one on autotrader at the moment for 2750, but it needs the infamours cambelt and a new fog light. Other end of the spectrum will get you one with everything done but expect to pay the price.
Cheers

Thanks Motofal,
I couldn't resist and picked one up yesterday! It's a one owner car with just 22k, but does need the infamous cambelt. I drove it home last night but haven't had a chance to have a proper play with it yet.
I've tried to do a bit of research on exactly what I should change along with the cambelt but there seems to be varying opinions and it seems as if you could get carried away and end up spending loads.
Does anyone have any suggestions for a Renault Specialist in the Northants / Beds area?

Cheers

lee5505 -Awesome mate put some pics up. Good effort finding one with that mileage! How does she drive?

Iain C - Yeah, its a brilliant feeling when you have wanted something for so long. Still cant quite believe its mine really. Gonna have another cleaning sesh next couple of days as I think the weather is looking good so Ill put osme pics up. Hopefully gonna get the wheels nice and tar free as well as the side strips. Is it possible to re-spray them yourself?

Cambelt should be ok for 70,000 miles. Some say you should change the belt evrty 5 years regardless of mileage

Cheers Motofal, she seemed to drive perfect, felt like new, original owner was nice chap who had garaged it every night and only used it at weekends, I don't think it's had a hard life.
Cambelt etc all booked in for next week, will be giving it a proper clean this weekend and will try to post a pic.
Cheers

Cambelts are good for 5yrs or 72k. As your was done at 24k no need to do it for another 20k.

Save the money and treat it to a trackday. It'll thank you for it and you won't stop smiling.

Well after a very rapid diagnosis from JMS (excellent service by the way) it needs new cambelt and dephaser - which Im fine with because Its due next year anyway. What Im not fine with is the fact it will need a 'box refurb in the future as I've got a whine in first. Agency have said it should last but obviously wanna get it done. Hmmm a phone call to the previous owner perhaps?
