My 172 cup has expired! :( VA-VA-BOOM! :(

  BMW 330d :)
I was coming back from a bit of a run today and noticed blue smoke pouring off the back of my 2 year old cup.I pulled over straight away to find the engine emptying its contents all over the road! :( Huge black oil slick and a call to my bro and uncle to hopefully tow me to the garage. When they arrived (On their bikes) they said that there was a trail of oil down the road for a good mile and a half, which i didnt know about until I saw the smoke. Cue the jokes about it being a typical renault "Va Va Boom" and "shaking its ass all over the road". :|

Managed to get the AA out though and the guy was really helpful, being careful not to damage the splitter on my car as he winched it to the recovery truck. He also had a look underneath to have a check to see if there were any holes under the engine, but there werent. THE SUMP PLUG HAD POPPED OUT! Obviously hadnt been tightened up on it last service 5,000 miles ago. He suggested that I put the sump plug back in and refill the oil but I want the garage to check for engine damage 2moro.

So my car is now waiting at the garage to get seen 2moro and hopefully everything should be fine with it. If not renault will be forking out for a new engine!!

The engine let at least 2-3 litres of oil out when I had stopped and the engine was off so do ppl think it should be ok?

Anyway here are some pics I took of my dead cup. (Just been washed previous to starting its smoking habit!)

Hopefully it all gets sorted sharpish as I miss it already!

Take the oil breather plate of the top of the block and look for any marks on the cam lobes sure sign for oil starvation, if you taking it to garage im sure they will check things like this.

Yeah well hopefully the garage do this but you never know. I noticed the car using more and more oil just before this happened, I topped it up a couple of nights ago. The oil was obviously draining slowly from the sump plug onto the undertray which is why I didnt see any in the drive. But when I first pulled over the oil was pouring out like a waterfall! I think my heart stopped beating for a couple of secs.

Anyway cheers for the comments guys im sure it will be fixed soon!

ah well, on the bright side your engine gets a nice fresh dose of oil after 5k miles, which is nice :)

I wasnt hammering it and had made sure the engine was fully warmed up as always before giving it any right foot action. The AA guy found the sump plug in the undertray under the engine so it had only just fallen out.

Im going to ask them to steam clean the engine and under the car cos there is oil all over the place. Exhaust included. :(

Oh and if the engine is damaged then surely renault have the honour the warranty as the sump plug wasnt done up properly. :|

sh*te news Fraser.

is it at rannoch drive reno?

Yup to be fair they have sorted out all the warranty issues ive had previously so it shouldnt be a prob. (Snapped rear disk brake, 2 split steering wheel grips, faulty cd player....) ;)

Hopefully everything should be ok. I was just thinking about getting another car too.... :(

I think your cars trying to tell you something on the vid mate. harsh I think renault should fix problems under warranty, if not under a guarantee for the work they did

Amazing how 1 plug can lead to engine failure. They should use a rubber O-ring when retightening the sump bolt afaik to get a good seal.

Hope they'll sort it mate, but knowing Renault they will fight for every penny.

The engine is fine, there was still 2-3 litres of oil in it when I switched it off, as luckily i had topped up the oil the day before. I made sure that no one tried to start the engine again. Renault will let me know 2day whats happening.

unlucky Fraser, might just go check my sump plug cause they were the last folk to do an oil change on my car!

ha - thats just happened to me at weekend!!

Yeah well if your car is still in warranty take it along to the garage and they should replace it. Design flaw with wheel. I havent had any probs with the dealership as yet.

Cheers

Maybe they just did mine up finger tight, and forgot to tighten it fully. just hope the engine hasnt been damaged but it shouldnt be with the amount of oil pouring out of it when it was switched off!

Hope you get it fixed soon Fraser. Make sure they clean it properly, or you'll be breathing oil vapour for ages.

Its back from the garage but hasnt been cleaned as I asked and they have dented the bonnet where they closed it. After a bit of arguing the service manager is going to take the dents out and hopefully get the oil off the underneath of the car.

Im also wanting in writing that the engine hasnt been damaged from the oil loss. But it did have at least half its oil left in it.
