think i have a slow one doesnt seem to feel quick at all, lots of loud induction roar from engine etc but it doesnt seem to wanna move to quick. rover beat me last week, maybe a turbo one tho and today a crappy cavalier, did say v6 on the back but wouldnt be a quick one surely, any of you guys feel your 172 doesnt pick up as it should, may need to have someone drive it and find another for comparison

Make sure you are in the right gear. It loves to be ragged. It pulls along nicely in any gear, but it only PERFORMS in the right one. If you start flooring it in 3rd....ask yourself whether dropping to 2nd might have given you a better start. Im a naturally lazy driver, so often dont drop a gear in mine. Once I learned to use the gears in it, it flew along a lot better.
Remember that the power is produced up at 6250rpm (and max torque is still high at 5400rpm), so if you start flooring it from 3500rpm, you arent making anywhere near max bhp and you arent in the torquiest area of the rev range. Therefore it is conceivable that other cars would catch you out if you werent in the right gear - losing a couple of seconds on the road is enough to lose out big time. Change on the gear change light so that the next gear is revving higher and you stay in/towards the power band.
If youre doing all that and still think its slow, then you are either very used to it or it has a problem. I wouldnt be too disappointed if a Rover Turbo Coupe beat you - their 0-60 is just over 6 seconds as standard and they fly in a straight line.

You need to hammer it in 1st gear although as i have said earlier make sure the engine is not cold. Dont be temped to change before 6k even though the engine is screaming for mercy. As long as everything is all in perfect working order and the oil is good the engines love it. Most people change into second too early and lose loads of torque once its arround 6k keep it there right through the gears. This powerband is where the 172 is king amoung hot hatches amd will eat Cavalier V6s for breakfast. As with most people on hear i have found that quick gradual presure on the excalerator pedal will give better results than fully pressing it after the gear change or from stationary. Also dont rev it up to high revs and dump the clutch coz all you will do is lose traction and or through the diff out the gear box.
I recomend going out now and getting some practice in while its nice weather and no kids about! Any one in the Nottinghamshire area better watch out coz im going hunting for scalps now

cheers for the advice, i found the problem, the air hose going onto the air filter was twisted, dont know how and when i opened up the filter it was covered in loads of crap. loads of leaves and stuff. their is also a hole formed in the hose where it was twisted. sorted it out best i can and then went for a drive. feels a lot better than it did and pulls a whole lot more. hopefully taking it to hill power soon for an induction kit and the ecu but debating on whether to wait amd save up for the throttle bodies.
