My car stinks

Whenever I have my aircon on, and to some degree, just the fan, my car puts out this old manky smell. Could this be down to the pollen filter, what else can I check?

I have the same problem!! any new pollen filter didnt fix it

You can get spray to spray down them to clean it and get rid of the smell, its because the moisture gets into it or Jills been in it!

where is the pollen filter in a Mk2 Ph1? i dont even know if ive got one. if i have AC does that mean ive got a pollen filter?

Yeah I think if you have AC, you have a pollen filter.

Where do you spray this wonderous stuff?

Down the air vents in the car..

Its just a build up of bacteria in the system. Either that or you dropped an egg sandwich down it a couple years back.

If youve got AC you dont automtically have a Pollen filetr, it was an option. Pollen filter is , ach I can explain where.. ill do a pic

the spray is good stuff.ur local motor factors, halfords aswel. will have it,the 1 i use is Coma cant remember the name but thats who makes it.

Its probably a bacteria build up in the air con system. I bought a can from Halfords to sort mine out and it worked a treat. The can is like a tear gas bomb, you leave the car running with the ac on full, then pull the tab on the can chuck it in the car slam the door and run. It cost about 11 quid if i remember. it worked very well.

Pollen filter is on left hand side under plastic gaurd (next to windscreen wipers)

Right cant see this in the above picture but far left next to the rubber liner (at bottom end of plastic) is one of those screws where you push the middle in and it releses it, that frees up the whole left panel.

The "new car scent" magic trees smell like Auto glym resin polish.

This also allows you to spray the stuff directly onto the evaporator once you have removed the filter.

Thanks for your help guys. I used the Comma AC cleaner from Halfords (£12) and it worked very well, although you do need to give your interior a good clean afterwards, because the spray gets on everything. Thats my excuse.

Always run the A/C full blast for 5 mins once a month.

Say when youre cleaning the car. Cleans out the system.
