My Clio MK3 1.2 progress thread. Turini's, coilovers and more.

Right so after being a member for well over a year and having recently started to modify my car after my recent bump in the snow and icy weather last year (I buckled 2 alloys and bought a set of 172 cup turini's of a cs member) I've finally been pushed enough by TomGardie and Ksykes23 to create my own project thread (Thanks guys lol).

I would appreciate and iideas and feedback from the rest of the Cliosport community to aid me in my project.

So abit about me. I have always loved cars but for some reason held of taking my driving lessons untill I was 20 (2011).
Living in a shitty post code and my first year of insurance costing over £3000 for anything but a 0.9 ltr Citroen C1 put me off I guess untill I was earning a full time decent paypacket.
Anyhow while shopping around for cars on autotrader one day I noticed Clio mk3's were a decent price and looked miles better then the other cheap to insure hatchback I was looking at. A Citroen C2.
I told a work colleague who was also looking for a car that I was going to buy a Citroen C2 so he went ahead and bought one. I jumped ship and purchased a Clio Mk3 and my god am I glad I made that decision lol.

Anyway lets move onto the car, that's why you're in this thread after all :)

I purchased this Renault Clio 1.2 (75) Extreme Tom-Tom on the 7th of January 2012 and passed my test on the 24th of January. There was nothing EXTREME about it except the body roll. It's basically the poverty spec Expession model but with 15" alloys and blue themed upholstery on the seats. I was told it also came with a seperate Tom Tom device that plugged in but the previous owner, a little old lady in Edinburgh, had kept it. It wasn't untill the MK3 PH2's that the tom tom was built into the dashboard. Oh well :)

Here's how she looked in all her standard goodness.

My first experience in my own car was sitting in the passenger seat as my stepdad drove it home where I continued to stare at it every day untill I passed my test two weeks later lol. Here it is back home after a good clean..
Shortly after in February I joined up to this site and used it for the next year to build up my knowledge about Clio's with its vast source of info.
My original plan was to keep it for atleast a year standard (minus the sound system that I fitted before I passed my test) just to build up my NCB and then part exchange it in for a Racing Blue RS 197. With my first year of insurance costing £3200 and insurance for a 197 still about £2000 with 1yr ncb and still 2 years of fiance left to pay that plan went out of the window.

The car stayed standard except for my kenwood headunit, pioneer speaker and Edge sub. The only advantage to the standard ride height was that it made a excellent off roader!

Here it is after a good clean up!

52212529905810683125019.jpg

After 10 months of ownership I thought the sound system needed a bit of a upgrade so I purchased a VIBE Black Air 12" sub which I only ever have turned up half way so I may downsize again in the future.
wp20130102007.jpg

And a PIONEER MVH-8300BT headunit which can display 117 different colours to match the orange leds and it's 3" screen and comes with better sound options then my previous headunit. Which you will see later on.

In December 2012 after finishing my late night shift in Rugby and driving home in 6 inches of snow I slid on some black ice and hit a snow covered curb with both passenger side wheels. I buckled them both and bent my steering arm and other components. AA wanted £160 to tow me 12 miles. Lets just say that was the slowest and most challenging drive home ever.
Knowing I needed two replacement alloys and tyres I found it cheaper to purchase a set of used 172 cup Turini's with tyres of of a member on here. This is when I decided to just keep the car untill the time is right for a 197 and to modify my non sport and get it to a place where I am happy with it.

Here's a pic of when I just had my steering all fixed up and Turni's fitted. The snow had begun to melt by now.

Being pretty skint after this untill next payday I decided to paint the front brake calipers red with a friend. We started this pretty late and it got dark really soon. To cope with the cold we thought straight drinking Russian standard vodka and Mickey fins would be a good idea. Next thing you know we're painting the rear brake drums red to at 1am in the morning and diving head first into snow. Somehow we didn't get paint all over the car and the wheels didnt fall off the next day. The brake drums are still painted at the moment. Let me know if I should keep them as they are or repaint them silver or black. Check that gap!

wp20130125003.jpg

A few weeks later after payday and selling stuff on ebay I went a little crazy with the mods. I got my RS Grille's which is one of the most effective mods for under £60.
wp20130216001.jpg

Next job was to get new brake pads as mine were nearly down to metal. The local garage wanted £160 to replace the two front pads where I kindly refused and told them to wait till next payday after just giving them £325 to fix my steering after the bump. I found a detailed guide to replacing the brake discs and pads on a Renault Laguna and figured I'd give it a shot. I bought a set of miltek brake discs and pads for £44 off ebay and succesfully fitted them within a couple of hours all by myself with no real knowledge. Tell a lie I did have a little help from a curious family member ;)
wp20130216002p.jpg

Heko Wind deflectors on next
wp20130214007.jpg

Then my new Vibe Black Air tweeters that sit flush on the dashboard replacing my broken tweeter case.

wp20130306016.jpg

I also fitted a stubby aerial, Renault valve caps and the Holy grail of mods for non-sport mk3's arrived next :)

These sat around for a week untill I had Pro tyres in Warwick fit them. The guys are great and I would recommend the place to anyone, fixed my positive camber without camber bolts too. These completely transformed the car and I've had numerous comments on how smart the car looks now. First thing my Store manager said after noticing how different my car looked the next day was "Am I paying you too much?" Ha.

Can't recommend these highly enough. Firm but forgiving with hardly any body roll (my arse now slips out of the standard seats while cornering so I'm on the look out for some 197 seats) the car's handling and looks have been transformed! Heres how she sat the same afternoon back home.

looks nice, could do with a spoiler though, you wouldnt believe how much it changes the whole look of the car, i have the ktec sprint on mine and couldnt recomen it enough

Right so after the coilovers were fitted in the next few days I installed 20mm Eibach hubcentric spacers on the rear. Really gave the car a more aggressive stance.

wp20130220003.jpg
wp20130220005.jpg

Next I bought some Phillips silvervision indicator bulbs for the front and rear.

wp20130222001.jpg

wp20130222002.jpg

Next up steering wheel trim.
wp20130220006.jpg

While I was at work the other day I noticed another Black mk3 that was identicle to mine minus the projector headlights and foglights.

wp20130225004.jpg

wp20130225005.jpg

My most recent mod was to the interior. I was getting fed up with the cheap non silver plastic air vent trim's and the blue dashboard trim made the Piano headunit look naff so it was off down to Halfords for some Satin Black paint, laquer and primer.

wp20130304001k.jpg

At first I thought what have I done?? But after painting the blue the finished result was much better.

wp20130306003.jpg

I promise the red light coming from underneath the steering wheel is not a nitrous kit but only my sub remote control ;)

Anyway we are pretty much up to date.. Here's how she looks from the outside at the moment.

wp20130306012.jpg

wp20130306011.jpg

A few other mods I haven't mentioned are the universal induction kit untill I can afford a BMC Carbon, a few cliosport stickers, renault silver valve caps and the boot debadge.

This is my list of future mods I am thinking about..

Ktec Sprint spoiler
Full alloy refurb as they are fooked. Either Renault Anthracite or silver. I'm open to suggestions.
Projector headlights and xenon kit if they are still legal.
Smoked rear led lights from Germany or the deeper red ones you can grab on the sxstyling website.
RS 197 front seats and rears (Already have rears)

Thank you for taking the time to look at my project thread. I'm kind of aiming to keep it OEM'ish and I'm very open to suggestions and feedback.

Good read mate...it's looking a lot nicer now! Your mods & future plans are fairly similar to what I have in mind for my TCE.

Sorry if I've misread it in your thread but what coilovers are they and where did you get them from?

Cheers, I think I may have to invest, I like the height you've got!

I don't have a thread atm as I haven't really done much yet other than an RS Grill and a few other bits. Plus I'm saving for me and the gf to go on holiday so funds for the car are short :-( I may put one up soon! :)

No worries.. They are definitely worth it and there is always the resale value of them if you go to sell the car. Someone is always after a set.

Haha smart man. Make the gf happy first then buy parts for your car ;)

You should definitely do it at some point. I feel we need more MK3 content on the site :)

That's very true :) I may even keep an eye out for a second hand set myself!
Haha of course always the way ;-) and yeah I agree there definitely needs to be more mk3 content! Keep an eye out I may post one soon ;-)

Didnt think it would suit the 16" turini's but it pulls it off very well lowered :) Drums painted black definatley, any other colour than black does not look cool!!

Thanks. At first the Turni's look lost in the arch but like you said once lowered it pulls it off really well. I'll probably paint the drums black when I next have a car jack on hand.

Haha I would like it lower but it kinda becomes impractical and crashy. A coke can would be crushed if I drove over it at current height. The fronts can still be wound down more but for the rears I would need custom springs as they're already down all the way. It's something I might look at in the future.

Big shout out to TomGarvie on here aswell. We had a meet up and he and his friend Kieran painted my RS Grille Satin Black. Great guys.
I did have it in the original post but It got deleted and I forgot to put it back in when I re-typed it. Here is his project thread http://www.cliosport.net/forum/show...oject-midlands-coilovered-MASSIVELY-PIC-HEAVY!

Cheers for the shout-out dude, glad you like your grilles! Your car's coming along really nicely mate, I'm thinking black drums next!:rasp:

Love what you have done to the car ... would only advice you on one thing, to give a varnish/polish on the grills/vents. I think it would stay even better.
Congratulations for your thread of your clio...

Kieran I will check how many coils I have left for you today :)

Craigie, I live in Canley, literally right next to you haha.

That's a good idea NKTA and welcome to the site! :) I have 2 coats of Lacquer on it already and once thats fully set I'll give it a polish..

Thanks CLIODARIUS.

No worries mate, going to watch this one!

Right so today I went and collected my RS 197 rear seats that I won on ebay. Bought them from Jake_197 off of Clio197.net. Bought his 3 roof handles off him while I was there so I now have some for the back :)
Really nice guy but unfortunately he's not a member on Cliosport..

Anyhow I stripped my old poverty spec rear seats out and put these in! (picture isn't the best as it was dark by the time I got them in.

wp20130308001.jpg

When bright light from the flash for example hits the stiching in the fabric it has a blue glittery glow that you can see on the left which is pretty cool. The material feels much better and seats feel slightly firmer but more comfortable. I now have headrests too! Make's a world of difference for people sitting in the back I tell you! Also both halves of the bench can fold down independently (my old set was one piece) which is convient as you can have a 3rd person sitting in the back and still fold down one side for large items to fit in the boot. I'm guessing this was probably a feature already present on the Dynamique models and not exclusive to the RS models?

Anyway I'm still on the look out for a set of front 197 seats (non recaros) if you see any anywhere please drop me a pm!

I'll probably put my Extreme seats up for sale with the unique blue pattern upholstery if anybody is interested once I have my front seats.

Definitely going to get some projector headlights with the black inserts in the future. There is a picture of my 20mm rear spacers fitted on the first page.

My turni's are ET 38.5 and the standard non sport mk3 alloys are ET 50. If you don't understand ET it basically means my Turini's stick out 11.5mm more than the Cansta/Mahonia alloys etc. Add my 20mm rear spacers and that's 31.5mm more than standard so 30mm spacers would give you a similiar look to my rear wheels (thats if you do have stock alloys)

ummm relatively happy with it now....main concern is to get it looking lovely for summer with some detailing. Still wanna get some spacers and possibly wind deflectors buts theres no major rush tbh. Not gonna be spending big money on interior or anything. Would also like to get the sound system better but all in good time :)

Sounds good. Same with the detailing. I would like to get into it when the summer comes around. All I really want at the moment is a front set of 197 seats and then I'm happy and the rest will come in good time.

Right so I haven't updated in a little while. I've fitted smd led bulbs in the interior light, side lights, boot and number plate lights. Last week I managed to track down a scrap yard and Renault specialist in Norwich that had a set of front RS 197 seats in stock. Drove 150 miles there today to pick them up and the rears (which I already had) were chucked in to so they will be up for sale. Not sure how I managed to fit it all in the car on top of my sub but I did it..

wp20130405002.jpg

Here they are fitted :) Love them!

wp20130405004.jpg

Just need to splice the side airbag wires again tomorrow and I'm all done :)

Managed to splice together the 15 or so wires together today under the seats. 4 of the wires under the drivers seat had the same bloody colour so I had to guess. As you would expect the last possible wire combination worked and turned the airbag and service warning light off... Success! :)

Big thanks to my mate Martyn who managed to tap the nut on the negative terminal with the handle of my socket wrench he was using to tighten the positive on the battery. Really enjoyed the firework show from my engine bay while I was sticking my mats down lol...

  Clio 1.5DCI S 106bhp
Handles like a go-Kart!! Cheers for the seats dude and nice meeting you :)

Hopefully my car will be up to your level next time you see it ;)

Cheers Matt. Likewise! Not a lot I can do to make it go faster so may as well just make it handle the best it can.

Your Clio is mint and there's so many things I would love from your car too haha. Projectors, keyless start etc etc :)

  Clio 1.5DCI S 106bhp
Yeah very true. You can alwaus ger a straight through exshust system, and then get it re-mapped pal :)

Haha, cheers pal ;) looked at coilover today too :p fitted my custom mats and seats too :p now I need some fronts!

Oooooooooooh seatssssss!:)

P.S. I bought 5 metres of velcro, my boot floor no longer moves, nor does my sub = problem solved;)
