My Day at K&N(Possible 56K)

  Ex Ph-Quick

Hi all,

As some of you know I went up to K&N today to let them use my car to test the new typhoon Induction Kit. It looks nice but does it do what it says on the tin???

Morning started at 7am with the trip from Derby to Warrington as i had the day off work it was a bit of a killer getting up at this time but a free £250 kit was on the line so rolled out of bed.

Got to K&N after getting lost in Warrington(Very Confusing place) at 9:30 and it was straight on the rollers for the standard test of the car. They must have the most fancy looking Rolling road Ive ever seen Full climate control exhaust vents sound proof room the lot.

HOW LOW?!?

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90/Eskiisbest/car/Induction%20Day/Photo-0118.jpg

Dont want the Beast ripping itself off the rollers now do we?

In motion

Well After a 3 run test to get an average it came out at 125bhp at the wheels which I thought was pretty sh*te but what do i know

Anyway it was the figure after that I was after so wasnt to bothered.

Dave the developer now had to fit the kit so thought Id go and enjoy the sights of warrington for a bit and walked into town.

Must say wasnt the most exciting place so walked back on the way I came across this (anyones here?)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y90/Eskiisbest/car/Induction%20Day/Photo-0119.jpg

After returning back the kit still wasnt on so watched them for a bit and had a chat to see if any other kits are in development, he said no but all could change when the new development list comes out next year. 182 maybe??

After the kit was fitted with no problems it was back onto the rollers time for the final test.

If anyone can host a small video for me would be very greatful

Thanks a lot stevieP

I have to say firstly the noice of the air being sucked into that massive pipe is awesome its like its trying to suck the wheel into it. Video will explain what I mean.

But it was power we were here for so he got to it.

After the test was finished I went in to see the graph. There was a noticable difference. At 5000 RPM there was a gain of 9 BHP.

The only disappointment was that the car was now only pushing 1 bhp more top end. so was now 126 bhp. but this was at 5800 RPM now intead of the peak originally being at 6300 RPM.

From the graph I got there is a clear performance gain from 3500 - 6200 RPM where i can find a scanner ill get it on here.

On the way back I could feel the improvement in response (So could a Celica)and pick up in higher gears not to mention the noise it makes at 5000. IMMENSE!!!

I know some people will say yeah but its not Closed induction and that the gain on the top was 1 bhp(Dont forget 9 bhp at 5000 RPM).

But I dont care for them. I didnt have to pay anything for the kit for one and I can definatly feel the improvements that its made to my car. Id welcome anyone to come and try it and disagree. Ill be at the Midlands RR day in august to give it another test.

Looks like a fairly simple principle. No reason why it shouldnt gain a bit of power.

I might see if I can make one up at some point to do a similar job and just put a universal sized filter on the end.

Very interesting mate, would definitely be good to look at the graphs, also what your power @ the fly was/is now. The kits sits where I thought it may do, looks like its prone to getting hit by stones or debris as you have no arch liner, it gets covered by something that looks like a black sock doesnt it?

125bhp at the wheels thou, is there something wrong with their rollers!?

Will be good to see this at the Midlands RR day.

Has something called a dry charger on it which stops the water getting in.

Plus its only open to the water because the arch liners are off.

Car was heavly driven back for 2 hours and pipe wasnt hot to touch

nice kit, i wouldbt be whinging about it not being a closed filter, the opening is where most place their intake anyway.

Neater install all round. Plus youll get the noise.

Thats the same model as my mate Focus RS and its in the same place and theirs a water proof cover over it!

Gives off a wicked induction roar!

I know it seems to be if its not the maxogen then shut up

  VW ....

IKs seem to be the great unknown with regards to performance ,the companies that sell them say u can see gains but they are gonna see that .

The problem is no one does a before & after on these like what u done today ,which was great .

Im sceptical about a Maxogen ,does it warrant £350 ?? no performance figures to back it up ,dare say it too sounds nice & looks the part but it maybe that it yields no better performance that the K&N at £100 cheaper.

Oh & Trax is at Silverstone on Sept 4th ,just i will be there & would like to see this .

Are u still running a standard exhaust ?

There is nothing unknown, but there are alot of opnions.

I have tested the majority of filters available on stock engines so i know what works and what doesnt in this application, i use what i recomend, i just dont babble about it.

The maxogen works, its just expensive

The viper works, its just cheap and nasty and tears and has a small filter element.

This K&N has nothing against it to say it shouldnt work.

you takes your choice though, and the nice thing is that we all have choice.

I ran a similar kit positioned even lower then that one that was actuall exposed underneath the car, had absoluely no water sock or cover on it. Ran it like that for 2 years and had absolutely no engine problems.

With the arch liner back on i would say that there would be minimal moisture sucked up in there and even if it was its got a long way to travel up that pipe!

correct, water and pudles wont damage your engine unless your intake is submerged 100% by water. And there is only one person to blame for that lol.

Looks like a nice snake. Free too, so always a bonus.

If you want noise, just take the cold feed pipes off - free mod for you.
