My first time with a porter cable on the Lupo.

Me and Mattjk had a go at PCing the Lupo today, I will get some pics up tomoz.
Overall I wasn't very impressed, compared to Matt's 182 the paint was rock hard. After alot of time wastiing with the sfx 2 and 3 pads and polishes went straight on with the sfx1 pad and polish, even this was quite ineffective in removing defects. Eventually I found the best combo was a Menz pad and sfx1 polish but even after a couple of goes at every panel on varying speeds including applying lots of pressure on 6 theres lots of swirls.

Any advice for more effective products for use on VW paint, its red by the way.

I think the main problem was the pad and polish combo didn't cut it (quite literally) any recommendations appreciated. Quite interested to hear from Ali as I know he did a red R32. Off to the pub now, started the fucker at 9am this morning, and I did on the washing and claying yesterday.

For a start, any decent amount of correction will only be achievable using the hardest pad, so not surprised the softer ones didn't help a whole lot.

As for swirls remaining, even though the VW paint is hard you should be able to work it well. Maybe your not spending enough time on each panel. I finish one at a time and don't move onto the next untill I am happy with the one I am currently working on. A bonnet on a bad car could take about an hour by itself using a couple of different polishes on it - lots of reasons why you didn't get the results you were expecting though - dirt on the pad, too much polish, not enough polish, not working the polish long enough, being too cold etc.

Get some photos up dude and should be able to see the problem easier!

You may be in for a long task on VW paint, I look after a Black R32 for a neighbour. Go down to 4 inch spot pads and work in smaller areas if need be.

When I did the initial correction on the above car I had to use 4 or 5 inch pads to do the whole car as the bigger pads where not effective. DP Super Swirl Remover was the polish of choice at the time, as Poorboys SSR 2.5 was proving ineffective. I have since used Menzerna IP on the car ( the guy swirls it up all the time when he washed it ) and that proved more effective still.

Think I need some stronger stuff, spent about 2hrs just on the bonnet. May have been abit cold although i did do it in the garage, probably used too much polish.

id probably try some of the more aggressive menzerna stuff using spot pads

Yeh, don't really need to elaborate...Rich's covered it really. The VAG paint is incredible hard! At that time i used a 4in spot pad for most the car, bar the bonnet and roof.

Menz 3:02 was sufficient, but then again it was a few degree's warmer...And that seems to make a big difference to the overal cut and application.

The golf took over 18hrs to do, And i think i spend about 2hrs on the roof alone! The lupo's a bit smaller, but still it's gonna take a while!

I did find a few photos on Dad's camera from this detail, its dark but you get the idea:
I need to order the full Menz IP kit then have another go.
(wheels hadn't been done at this point).
