My Hairdressers mk2 mx5

well some of you know i had my iceberg and sold it to make funds for the house deposit, then bought a cheap ph1 and loved it but i fancied something different before getting a house etc so i pm'd midge of here about his mx5 he had for sale.

we come to agreement that my ph1 and cash his way id get his mx5

first impressions was good, however getting used to having a welded diff wasnt as easy as first thought,but loving the look of 9j wheels from the back

heres the pictures from his advert

however the front end didnt look mean at all and the number plate i found awful so a bracket and square plate was ordered, along with tinted inside headlights and removing the orange filter, raised about and inch so was drivable

now looks like so..

wheels should hopefully be refurbed black tomorrow, removing rear badges from back and putting a mazda badge on the front

hoping to get it something like this bar the spoiler..

and then get the ducktail spoiler like so

I've seen a MX5 near here that looks almost exactly like the first one you posted, looks good but the ducktail suits the car better imo.

Get the hard top off and the roof down.

Rear wheels look a little deep in the arches, have you added camber?

I had a black mk.2 and loved it. in fact, it's over there

You will have trouble getting a look like the Mk.1 you've pictured, I'd suggest you look at what Mazdaspeed did in terms of front splitters and there are a couple of rear wing options which aren't completely ridiculous, one which curves over with the bootlid and another, racier type with metal uprights. Rear moulded mud flaps would be good too.

EDIT: Oh and good work, for not going pauper with a Mk.1

Like it. I love MX5's. I had a MK1 for 15 months. Such a good car.

They're a little underpowered but they're just so much fun. The handling is superb, so much feedback. On good matching tyres mine used to create a superb amount of grip too.

Looking forward to seeing this progress.

I would defiantly come rob but as I'm a manager of a bookies and it being grand national this weekend I have more chance of pulling Cheryl Cole!

The welded diff ermm well it's good in the sense of being able to drift so easily, but when pulling away or parking and I have turned my wheels it makes the wheel skip and make horrible noise/feeling

Fair play mate, as nice as it seems, I'm not I could live with a welded diff. I'd love a passenger ride at some point though? I'm down your way on tuesday for college if you fancy a mini meet in the evening? I've never been out in one of these old mx5's so I wouldn't mind seeing what all the fuss is about?

The welded diff is the one thing about the car I'm unsure on, Been looking to see how much a new standard diff would be to have fitted actually.

The wheels are defiantly going black tomorrow, they need a refurb and I managed to get all the paint I need for £30 to do them so if I don't like them black it's only another £30 to have them silver again

You should be find a specialist who can do the LSD-swap job fairly easily.

Given you've got the 1.6 though, may as well just swap out to a standard diff, you wont be doing much in the way of wel sik driftage.

even the 1.8 is hardly a y0-drifting powerhouse, the later funky-valves version was a degree better but unless you end up doing a transplant or bolting a blower to it, you've not got a slider. Still, it's spot on for nailing apexes and carrying corner speed

Welded diff = dodgy.

Be careful with the MX5 bug if you're trying to save money, the car maybe as cheap as chips but modifications are just as expensive as any other car - still can't believe I spent as much on my MX5 suspension as I did buying a 172. Still miss my Mk1 on wet roundabouts though..

The only (and I mean moderately) cost-effective of modding any car is to uprate parts you need to replace though.

Exhaust dead? Time for a fancy one
Busted spring? Time for lowz / coilieez
Etc.

Servicing on a '5 isn't tragic though, and as they run perfectly on 15's, tyres should be the same as a Clio

Your have no trouble swapping the welded diff for a standard diff on driftworks/mx5nutz, the swap is relatively easy, i think most mx5's came with a torsion lsd diff.
