My new 172- Have i got an mpg issue?

  172
Hi guys

Just wanted to post to say i've recently bought a black 172 from DTM cars, love it! And the guys there have been greats answering any problems i may have.

Pictures below of when i bought it. One thing ive been thinking about though is its MPG, sorry as i know theres loads of threads about mpg but i'm not sure if i have an issue or not.

Ive driven the car about 80 miles or so since i got it, town driving but in low traffic, yet my mpg will not rise above 25mpg even when driving like a granny below 3000rpm and i have reset it multiple times. I have put a code reader in but there are no codes coming up. Ive read on here about lambda sensor causing poor mpg but surely a code would come up if it was that?

Is there an issue or is low twenties an acceptable level, i assume it isnt ha.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

You should be seeing 30mpg/35mpg if driven normally, my sister 182 is on 34mpg i do believe over the last few k. Lambda sensors/blocked air filter/poor timing/poor fuel/plugs, may even have a slight misfire that your unaware of.... Loads of items that can have an effect. Ideally it needs Clip to see some live data etc.

  182 ff
mines 25 round town ..when my lambda sensor went, it went down to 15 even less. go on a bypass or motorway, reset while driving..i get over 35 on a motorway..if its not going over 25, then must be something wrong... or your mph readout is broken..

I assumed around that mark was the right amount especially when driving like I have been, when I bought the car there was a misfire on it, however andy and Trevor sorted that out for me so it seems to run smoothly now.
Sorry for naivety but what is clip?

Well I say 25 but that's its best, usually sits around 22, I'll have a drive with it in the morning on the a1 see what it reads sitting at 65 or so

Also, did your dash light come up when lambda was broken? As I have no warning lights so didn't think it would be that

IMO driving style matters a lot, I've had a million clio's and it's easy to get under 30, though if driven carefully it should be easy to get over - the 172 I have for sale at the moment I can quite easily get it to show around 40mpg

Make sure it is serviced, make sure the cam timing is correct (that will definitely knock consumption) and get someone with the right equipment to check the lambda readings

As has been said really. Before mine was serviced I was getting around 40mpg on a run.

No car enjoys slow traffic, however you should be getting better. Mine doesn't drop below 35 with a mixture of driving.

Yeah I've been driving economically to be honest so realise something is up, how would I go about checking cam timing

Clip is the Renault diagnostic computer, lambda sensors don't always chuck a light on, that's why clip is handy as you can see what both sensors are doing. Had a 2.0 laguna in once that was doing 20mpg, no engine lights. Clip test showed the downstream sensor wasn't doing its thing, changed it and it got 30mpg easily. Also seen bad timing on the 2.0l (f4r) which caused crap mpg, corrected it, all good.

Could be a number of things, if it was mine i would be running a clip test, checking for faults and watching the live data. If all checked out i would move onto serviceable items and then the timing.

Mine has drunk over half a tank over 80 miles.....
Mpg reads 25 and sometimes 18 lol

Mines feked!

So I did an experiment this morning, got on the A1 reset trip, drove at 65 ish for about 15 minutes and got an mpg of 46 average.

Reset the trip for way back and was at around 52 until town traffic at which point it dropped to around 46 again.

So maybe the car just isn't great at short journeys and town driving, I'm pretty happy with what I got and luckily 90% of my driving will be motorway miles.

I'm driving from Newcastle to London this weekend so will be able to get a reading from a 300 odd mile journey.

Is your foot constantly mashed to the floor? :p
No its not. Im actually trying to drive nicely.
On the motorway @ 70Mph with Cruise control on its doing 32Mpg. I was under the impression it would do around 45+

In town its always Very low 20's or mid teens if there is traffic.

Taking it to a Renault Specialist soon for a complete health check and repairs if i can wing it under warranty.

Will that sensor being faulty cause the car to drink all that petrol??
They should be covered under the warranty so may get them replaced as well when it goes in for stuff

Well, driven 104 miles so far, and am on the notch below half a tank.

I was expecting at least 350-400 miles from a tank full tbh

yes my light come on(down to 14 to 15mpg faulty sensor))..sometimes mine goes to 22 or 23, depends if your in traffic..if you was getting 46 on a motorway/bypass ..that's seems fine.. its better than mine, I have new oil, plugs and lambda sensors ,and its on v power fuel..
in town it mpg decreases rapidly..what mpg do you want from a 2 litre car?

I was just unsure as I had seen people claiming 35 in town, however now I've gotten 45+ on motorway I think it is fine, and I'm happy with it, just seems lower than others when it comes to town driving.

As I said, I'll be doing a real test when driving from Newcastle to London, will post results afterwards.

Cheers for your help though.

Pop in if you want us to plug it in to the Clip :) not a problem just call before you come

I drove home tonight to London and achieved 46 mpg so I think it's fine! Maybe my foot is not as light as I thought around town ha!

Thanks for all your help though!!

Mine also does 29-30-35 on town runs it varies but ultimately it sits around that and 37-40 if the trips reset on a run doing 70-80mph sometimes even sitting at 45ish mpg

thats with stealth exhaust and induction kit.

Mines crap also.. just manages 25 in town according to computer. Error codes saying abs issues xcant see that having an issue?

  Clio 182
I have a 182 (not sure if that makes a whole lot of difference) which gets a "clearout" at least once a journey after i've warmed her up. i regularly get between 30-35 combined with steady town driving and enthusiastic sprints around certain roads. When i'm hacking it though it will drop to low 20's. i have managed 43 at best mind on duel carriageway.

  Clio 200 full fat
got my car in september last year and had a top end re-build (snapped belt when i got it ) once i got it all running had it dyno'd and no matter how slow and cautious i drove i could not get better then 29mpg then i had my cam seals re-done as it turns out they had been fitted wrong had to have the belt re-done and timing done driving my car since i have had all this re-done have been getting 33-34 mpg when driving normal even got 35mpg last night im guessing from the sounds of it my timing was out

  Clio 172
oh wow! Im shocked at some of these figures in a good way! :) I came from owning an Audi TT and the trip computer would make figures up. My actual average MPG was always around 35/6 on motorways and in the region of 26/7 around town but the car read in the area of 40s on the motorway and 30s around town. I thought the clio was happily over estimating as well when my average MPG was coming in at 42mpg this morning but I have just done a quick calculation and I'm actually getting 41.4mpg on average! :) Seems the clio is actually fairly accurate!

Just working out mine. Looks like I'm on 26mpg. .... far too low. Might take it back to garage and ask them to check timings
