My non-clio: supercharged BMW 318is project

M

mini-valver

Coming along well now! IC set up has worked in well, what management are you going to use?
The IS' have LSD standard, right?

Cheers :)

Left :rasp:, A common thought is that the 318iS's came with LSD's, regrettably they didnt :( so trying to source a 3.91 LSD, best option would be a 4.10 but they rare as rocking horse s**t.

I'm going to be running it on a V3 Mega Squirt system (name always alarmed me lol) supplied by a local firm, very good system that you build up yourself so will learn alot with that and also comes with software to map it yourself :)

I forgot I had this here.

For any one who's interested here's very quick update, wont go into major detail.

To allow for my FMIC pipe work I redesigned the lighting system and converted it to work with one headlamp

I did a coil on pl;ug conversion to get a stronger spark to the engine and get rid of the HT leads:

IMG_3231.jpg

I fitted wheel studs to make wheel changes easier:

IMG_3435.jpg

Bought and fitted a front Wilwood big brake kite, discs are 280mm up from 260mm and 4 pot calipers. Along with this I've replaced the rubber brake hoses with braided ones.

IMG_3548.jpg

I had to relocate the alternator to make use of its mounting points for the super charger on the other side of the engine. I designed a plate and spacers and had it machined up.

IMG_3638.jpg

Engine is now ready to go in, hoiked the old one and and plonked the new one in:

Fitted my remote head and plumbed in the oil pipe work:

IMG_4166.jpg

Fitted all coolant pipe work and she started first time here's some pics:

I've also relocated the battery and installed a battery isolator system for the track days for safety. I've also been fitting window mechanisms to replace the wood that previously held the windows up and general bits like that.

I'm now fitting a Rotrex super charger instead of the Eaton. I'll be picking the charger up in a few datys and comencing that part of the project. I did eventualy get an LSD managed to get a 4.1 but cost an arm and a leg but it had been fully rebuilt and had the clutch upgraded from 2 to 4 plates, looking forward to fitting it and using it.

For more detail on the systems outlioned above check out my project page here: http://www.visionracingdevelopments.co.uk/project-bmw.php

I have a 4,27 lsd on mine if you want your's to go like a fcuking stabbed rat, It will bounce off the limiter in top though LOL

Why not just fit a 3.0 M3 engine and have a monster?

Because it would mess up the geometery and balance of the car and I'm doing this and going to have a monster ;)

I picked up my C30-84 Rotrex charger.

Ok so I have been designing my bracket. This is what I've come up with so far. It will be made from water cut and welded sections of thick aluminium:

Before I start properly measuring this I do need to get my crank pulley fitted up or it's a waste of time.

Will go with my wood and glue oil filter remote head

Wood tape and rattle can lid intercooler:

Flimsey ali Eaton charger bracket:

Wooden alternator relocation plate:

And my conduit oil hoses :)

All seemingly stone age but all systems have worked perfectly thanks to them.

Um lol.... next year..ish :D! There's another lad who's also doing a rotrex build and we've been swapping lots of ideas and stuff and looking at doing a track and road double feature in one of the BMW mags :)

Haven't done an update for a while so here's a small one.

318iS gearbox with the correct flange :D which arrived the other day. Fitted it last night, f**k me is it so much easier with a ramp and a transmission jack!

IMG_6467.jpg

Finally cleared the boot out and clamped the battery in there. I’ve left the bit of cable as I would like to get a light weight battery in the future so might need some extra length:

IMG_6391.jpg

While it was working I bought some go faster bits. I bought a 350mm steering wheel for the inside :)

IMG_6442.jpg

IMG_6470.jpg

I had some rear strut reinforcement plates made. Also ordered some CompBrake rose jointed top mounts but they haven't arrived yet:

IMG_6430.jpg

IMG_6431.jpg

On the super charger side of things I've decided to do away with the remote oil filter and use a bracket which a freind of mine is using to speed things up and keep costs down.

Another wooden model, picking up the proper bracket next week!:

IMG_6475.jpg

Phase one is, sorta complete! Just gotta bleed the brakes and fill the gearbox with fluid and then go from there, take her down the road.

Finaly, I quite like this pic :)

Good work, love the look of it in last picture.

I've read the thread before but must have missed it, what management are you going to run it on?

Also worth bearing in mind, that most say stick with the standard airbox over an open filter. Opens make barely feck all differance to sound or performance on the i.s ( sound lovely on the 325 though) I ran an ITG panel in the standard airbox on mine.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Ohh I know bud, iS's loose out with em if anything but it came on the car and seeing as it wont be running NA for long (I hope) it can stay lol.

I am rather upset you sold yours tbh :rasp:

So am I now I sold it LOL I guess a scrappies somewhere, will have the box part for next to feck all, don't need an AFM, so easy fix I guess.

Get some vids up as soon as shes up and running :):)

Well today was the first mile stone reached with the project :) I finaly drove the thing and completed a track day! :D (only took me 4 years :dapprove: ) I sorted out the smokey Joe zaust with a dose of K-seal worked a treat.

The car did really well, I did about 75miles on 20L of fuel (17mpg FTW) . Got the brakes bled up first thing and then spent abit of time just bedding them in. Was a little worried about how loud my exhaust was going to be but was only 88db.

The only problem I had all day was a slight issue with a leaky steering rack seal and a small drip from the engine some where but nothing like a day ruiner!

Any way, piccys:

Looks great!

What are you doing regarding the bracket for the charger, having someone machine it up from your template...or doing it yourself?
