Ive had a pretty busy weekend, which started on Friday night with a http://www.vwclub.co.zahttp://www.vwclub.co.za party, moved into Saturday and a RR day with the same club, and finishing off with a Trax day on sunday.
Im going to skip over the party on friday except to say it was filled with PS/2 GT3, various Jeremy Clarkson videos, loads of crap being spoken about, and even more booze (and a healthy dose of women willing to don nipple caps).
Saturday was rather interesting as it was the first time Ive had the mk1 172 on the RR so I was praying I didnt have one of the weak ones.
Before I go any further Im going to explain that firstly Im in Johannesburg which is 1500m above sea-level and this means that there is a lot less oxygen available in the air for the engine to use so it naturally loses a lot of power, roughly 15%.
Secondly the only fuel available to us here is 93RON so as you can imagine the timing is quite conservative to compensate.
Thirdly the temperature was 30 degrees C which as we know is a real power sapper.
Fourthly Im running 16" 205/45 wheels which might lose me a little power.
Anyway I made 114bhp & 144Nm @ the wheels
Only 2 other 2.0 cars made the same power on the day, one being a Nissan Sentra 200STi with zorst, filter, and flowed head and cams, the other being a race spec VW Polo 2.0 8v with zorst, filter, 298 degree cam, head work, and stand alone fuel management.
As a comparison there was a Stock Honda Civic VTi there too which only made 102bhp and 109Nm @ the wheels and this Vtec in particular is known to be quite strong.
Overall Im very happy with the power I made and Im sure I can push the power even higher after I decat, chip and put in a decent air filter.
Today was also a lot of fun at the Trax day with the following as highlights on the day:

Im still lapping in 1:23s with a personal best 1:23.3
Worst part of the day was me clipping the dirt on Clubhouse corner with my rear tyre, going into a spin and filling the car with half of the dirt from Zwartkops...Im gonna have a time getting it all out again.
Apparently Im considered mad by some of my mates from the VW club because of how I take the corner just before the pit straights...oh well, now they can call me "Mad Frenchy" instead of just plain ol "Frenchy"
