Nano 4gb or iPod Video 30gb?

  Citroen DS3 DSport
Ok advice time.

I've decided to replace my car stereo with something more capable and also with full integrated ipod support. I'll probably buy either Alpine or Pioneer for £150 or less. The question is which ipod to buy. I can buy a refurbished 1st generation Nano 4gb for £85 or do I buy a 30gb ipod Video for £143? It'll mainly be used for in the car and at the gym. Is it worthwhile spending the extra cash on the Video or do I save money and buy the Nano?

If it's for the gym as well defo go for the nano. They're so small and light that you barely notice they're there.

I've got the 8gb Nano and use it all the time in my car too, got around 1500 tracks on it.

One thing i will say is that i found the headunits with ipod support quite slow and clunky to use, including that Alpine full speed one too. I ended up getting an Alpine 9856R and just using a cable linked to the auxiliary input.

Obviously you can;t see the track names on screen or change tracks via the headunit but this honestly isn't a problem.

if for gym u really need the nano, ipod video is HDD based and nano is flash based i think surely the nano must be? its tiny!

id go for the nano.

Not really, it's just common sense that you don't scroll through tracks when moving. Use of playlists and the shuffle feature are all it takes. Plus it's so much quicker to scroll through with the iPod.

Are the 2007 full speed Alpine units really that bad? That may be a factor in helping me decide on what to buy. I already have a 40gb iRiver mp3 player but it is very bulky and not suitable for gym use.

As a 3rd option I can get the 8gb Nano for £124.99 delivered.

I seriously would advise against buying one before testing it. That way you know what it will be like.

I tested the 9850Ri in the local Halfords and the worst thing about it is it takes an absolute age to scroll through the tracks. I didn't really notice any delay when selecting a track, but when scrolling through with the wheel it doesn't skip more tracks the faster you spin it, as the ipod does.

Get a 8Gb Nano, got one myself and they are great!

It may be the best option as it'll hold more than enough albums for listening to in the car, for the gym it's a great size of unit. My only hesitation is knowing that for £15 more I can get a 22gb memory increase with the iPod Video.

If you already have the iRiver anyway i'd go for the nano, unless you're going to get the most out of the video function of course.

The video function is not a priority, I've read that the battery life when using the video playback is terrible. The iRiver has 40gb of storage but to be honest I usually end up listening to the same core selection of albums which probably would make the 8gb Nano more than suitable for my needs.

Is there a workaround to disable the volume limiter placed on th EU iPod's?

I'd like to know that too actually. I've just been using iTunes to bbost the volume over 100% to a level where it doesn't affect quality.

go for video 30gb.. .

30gb is definately enough room.. plus when your on your long distance or short flight during summer hols you can watch your fav movies..

Gf bought me one last week. Its awesome! Nano is dated and wats the point in buyin an apple one when theres possible other brands with 4gb mp3s..

go for video..

I want the Apple version because I'd rather buy a headunit which fully supports the iPod rather than my old setup with my iRiver. Fingers crossed I find one that works well.

The Nano has been ordered now, I doubt I'd ever use the video mode of the 30gb unit and the Nano will be better for in the gym.

I got an 8GB nano from the states specifically for use in the gym and it's ace. I hate iTunes, I wish you could transfer folders over and store them exactly how you have them in your music folder on your pc, but once you've mastered finding the tracks you want, it's great.

That price is excellent too. I paid $250 plus $20 for a belkin neoprene case and armband.

I'm using it with my iMac so all my music files are already ordered in the way that Apple chooses which will make transfer relatively simple :) My only fear is that the volume of the EU model is lacking, can any owners clarify this? I'll need to buy a case and armband.

I don't really know about this as i use some Shure E3 in ear head phones that block out a lot of sound from outside, meaning you dont need it at full volume anyway. I think Apple do their own version too.

  Better than yours. C*nt.

I've got an Alpine Fullspeed and it's ace - dunno who suggested it was slow and clunky but I've never had a problem with mine and it's been brilliant - I don't have a single CD anywhere in my car and I've got around 9 days worth of solid music to choose from... And my 60gb is nowhere near full...

  Citroen DS3 DSport
8gb will give me many hours worth of music, if I was to copy the albums I actually listen to off of my 40gb iRiver then they'd probably not amount to more than 2gb. I think I have around 20gb stored on it.

Which Alpine HU do you own?

i always thought ipods were s**t being a 'creative' person but got an 80gb one with over 40gb of music now on it, and its the nuts, i never use cds this thing works on all the stereos in my house and with ipod support in the car i cant argue, battery is a bit gay tho!

def video mate!buy a s**t one for the gym!

:D I've already bought the 8gb Nano. It's all I need for in the car and gym, I have my 40gb iRiver for home use.

Well ta very much! I'll download the trial and have a go, I'll let you know how I get on!

The Nano arrived yesterday and i love it. Wish I'd bought one sooner as it is far better than the iRiver it replaces. :)

Went out and bought the new Alpine iDA-X001 today for using the Nano in the car. Access speed is very quick between the headunit and ipod.
