new brakes squealing..Help!

  Not a poxy Renault
Fitted my ds2500's and HC discs last weekend to my 182 (24k miles), fitted no probs, left shims in but ground a little from the pad backing for them to fit. After bedding in they have started squealing when hot, as if the disks are not running true. I read a few threads and decided to remove the shims, re-clean the calipers and turn the discs around 180 degrees. After a test drive just now it seems as if the 'wonky disc' sound has got worse on one side, and to be quite honest its pretty embarrasing, sounds as if I've kidnapped a load of canary's!
Any Ideas, can you get HC discs too hot when bedding in to warp them?

you may've damaged the disc/s

i'm at bruntingthorpe tomorrow, i can pop over after and have a look if you want

Theyre gone, better under braking but worse when not braking, plenty of copper grease on them aswell

Might take you up on that fred, I could probably meet you somewhere. Is it just a matter of checking the runout when fitted? anything else to look for?

I suppose I've voided my warranty then by putting these pads on. Mind you Renault monkeys would probably f~#k it up anyway. Anyway I'd be grateful for you to have a look fred, I'll PM you.

I could handle the squeal if it was only when braking. Mine do it all the time when warm!

just been for another spin around the block, definately passenger side + getting worse. Pretty sold on the sticking caliper idea, a bit poor for a 24k mile car! I take it the fitting of new pads - winding the piston back, has caused the problem, it was ok before.

its weird we had a customer with a trophy with a knackered caliper after 8Kmiles

a new exchange caliper is about £80

Would it free off if I worked the piston backwords and forwards a bit? or is it a replacement job?

try taking the caliper apart and greasing up the sliders and freeing up the piston, but 9/10 times we just replace the caliper, saftey and all that

I'll have another bugger about with it in the morning, thanks for the help fred.

Right then, have taken caliper apart and re-fitted disk after cleaning hub, Cleaned and greased guide pins (pretty good anyway), moved piston in and out a couple of times, put a dab of copper slip on ends of pad plate, re-fitted and bled caliper (just in case) also noticed a touch too much fluid in the reservoir so pumped it out to correct level. - all on the passenger side only by the way, this was squealing like a pig!
Just been for a spin and its 85% better, still catching slightly when quite hot after braking and mostly around left handers. Now the drivers side is the one making the most noise - squeak, squeak, squeak., mostly after braking and around right handers.
TBH I could probably live with the noise now, however its not right and brakes really should be perfect.

sanded glaze from drivers side pads copper slipped the pad backing ends and cleaned and greased the sliders, now silent! just been doing some serious braking as well. Still a slight niggle with passenger side!

  130i, 306 hdi, vrs
Mine make the same noise but i only use the car for fun or track days so i just put up with it ,
I couldnt live with it if i had to use it everyday!

did about 30 miles this afternoon, normal road driving. They squeak for a few seconds after braking, passenger side worse, especially around left handers, and more noticable at lower speeds e.g. OK on country roads but squeak, squeak, squeak through villages. Not too bad but would like to be noise-less, any more ideas appreciated!

for anyone interested, its cured! as said before passengers side was squeaking while not braking and around left handers, I took the pads out again, re-dressed the edges i had previously ground to fit the pads, thoroughly cleaned the caliper but this time scrubbed the inside with a brass brush to remove all old brake dust / dirt. Re-cleaned the pads and applied loads of copper grease and, heres the key bit, replaced one anti-squeal shim. I think the pads were too loose in the caliper with no shims (due to my grinding episode) and were slapping around, too tight with both shims in and sticking and just perfect with the one shim. I suppose I could have ground more off to fit with both shims but hey, it works as it is so why touch it!

  225 and 182
Glad you got it sorted :) I'm going down the DS pad route soon so i'll take on board your experiance .
