New Cambelt wining

  clio 1.6 16v 2001
I've just had the cambelt and tensioner done on my 1.6 16v today and now i've noticed that it has a wining/whirring noise which is related to engine speed.
Done a search and it sounds like it could be over tensioned.
Does anybody know how they are supposed to be tensioned when fitted?
I assumed that the spring dictated the ammount of pressure applied to the belt and thats all there was to it.
Does it work on a ratchet system or something similar?
I just really need to know what i'm talking about before I take it back and have a word.

they've fucked that up then, did you have the water pump done too?

did they use the special renault timing/locking tools?

did they even have a clue? had they done one before?

lol bet u didnt take it to a renault dealer did u, other s**t garages havent got a clue on renaults, especially cambelts, little garages are always asking us to lend them the timing tools, like fuk

does sound like they have tensioned it wrong or something. On some vehicles its normal once its been changed (peugeot expert van) but its not the case on the clios afaik.

Mmm,
Had it done at a back street garage but they do have a good reputation though.
Just had the belt kit and dogbone gearbox mount done,no water pump.
Would it be just new belt noise or does it need re tensioning?
Could it have damaged the new belt?

"new belt nosie" doesn't exist!

if the tensioner is anything like the RS one i know exactly what they've done

Ok,
Thanks for the advice.
I've just realised i've got a Haynes so I've had a look to see how it all works and I think I know what they have done aswell.
Is the RS one an ecentric cam type with a locking nut in the middle?
I would imagine they all use a similar type.
I'll take it back tomorrow and see how they tensioned it.
Will keep you posted.

Cheers for that.
If they don't have the right kit i'll take it somewhere else to get it done and bill them.
Lesson learnt.

Quick update..
Took it back to the garage this evening and they had a good look round the belt area.
I spoke to one of the chaps that did the belt change and they did use the locking tools and positioned the arrows on the tensioner correctly, spun the engine two revs and re-checked the position etc so I'm happy that they did the job properly.
Now, on the way to work this morning I sort of changed my mind a bit about the symptoms.
I only got to drive it a couple of miles last night so I think I could have mis- diagnosed the noise.
It seems to be more speed related which might tie up with me having the dogbone mount done at the same time.
I've kind of had a bit of a grumble from (I think) one of the front wheel bearings for a while and I am now wondering if the new mount is accentuating the noise and that's why I can hear the whining (spelt correctly this time) sound.
It almost sounds like a straight cut gearbox type sound though so i'm hoping it's nothing too serious.
Any thoughts?

They've wacked the tensioner on, and started the 13mm nut on by hand (to keep the peg on the back of the tensioner in), till it touches the tensioner, put the belt in, got the jockey wheel on as usual, used the 6mm allen key as usual to tension it, but because the 13mm is against the tensioner, the allen key goes round but the arrow doesn't until you they've gone too far.

The 13mm can't touch the tensioner atall, not even hand tight.

Thought the manual says to wind the nut up to 7nm to tension? Says so in the F4R manual and the tensioner looks the same as the K4M one, seem to remember doing it the same way when I changed my 1.6 belt and never had any problems?

I'll agree they've overtensioned the belt though. My aux belt whined slighty after changing it but it went away after 5-10 miles or so, just put that down to the new tensioner settling down seeing as its a spring one.

Thanks for the info guys.
I'm now convinced it's not the belt but a transmission noise of some kind.
It's definatly speed related, not engine speed though.
The new dogbone has made a world of difference to how it drives, much smoother take off and no jerking gearstick when you come off the throttle
but I reckon it has shown up some other problem that was less noticable before, unless they always whine like this.
It's not really bad or anything, just a diffrent noise than before.
