New exhaust is too noisy...

  1998 BMW e46 323i
Just bought a longlife complete system for my 172, from a longlife franchise. The quality looks good, but it's boomy at idle and too noisy from inside the car; sounds like there's no back box.

The guy asked how loud I wanted it, and I said quiet, as I do a lot of m'way miles. He said 'mild note'. They then gave me a courtesy car and shuffled me off for 2 hours.

What do I do, just drove back from the fitters and on the m'way it's actually ok and it does seem to pull better than before. But driving stop start around town I feel like a kev or trev in a nova.

Travelled to effing leeds to have it fitted too, cos I wanted it pronto.

Just rang the garage, and there's no answer. Should I email them? Or are they just gonne tell me to eff off?

It will get quieter once it coked up a bit! Ive got one and mines on lowest sound setting which is still quite booming if you put your foot down.

Seriously, it will quieten? Does sound like there's no back box... Is a lovely looking bit of kit tho.

It will only get louder. And louder. And louder. Trust me.

I had one fitted by them and it was a joke. I could have done it better using chocolate and sellotape.

They are a f**king s**t company and whenever anyone asks me about them i warn them to steer clear.

Its probably because your not used to an exhaust note mate, i was like that for a start and when i was used to it i didnt even notice it was there :) and theres nothing wrong with novas when there done properly ;)

As above, myself and Daniel have been victims of longlife.

I felt a bit like that when mine first got fitted, not Longlife though. I like the noise at idle and when it's being driven hard, but stop/start driving doesn't sound good in my opinion.

My solution was to cut out as much town driving as possible and drive it hard at every opportunity.

Just rang the guy, he said put 2k miles on it, if it's still too noisy he'll stick some extra baffles in it, not a problem, he'll quiten it down.

Seems pretty decent of him?

Just a pain I've got to drive it like this for 2k and then drive 70 effin miles to Leeds again.

Are they louder than a yozza? I recon i could live with that. Although it would be annoying having a loud exhaust because in my car you can put your foot down without attracting attention, or gaining speed for that matter ;)

it wont get quieter dude, i remember you asking how loud they were before?????

i had one on my old car.

you're either a modified car person or you're not.

take it back and ask them to put a more baffled box on now, or it will eat away at you every time you drive it.

alternatively ask them to put a tighter mandrel bend into the exhaust,

if they tell you it's not possible (and they will)

then argue, this will make the exhaust much quieter

Mine was a powerflow zaust from Hawleys of sheffield! probably similar, And it has got a bit quieter, I should know seeing as its my car :)

Well I'm busy all this week and next saturday. I'll give it a week, then get on to him again. Can't just nip 70 miles to the garage.

It's annoying as I explained what I wanted, just a replacement system that wouldn't rust and need replacing every few years...

The fella has been reasonable, so I'll give it a week and then just tell him it's doing my nut in.

When I got my custom system made on my peugeot it was too loud for me... I was actually told it would get louder over time!? I booked it in the next week for a silencer to be added, didn't make a huuuge difference but took the edge off!

You definitely get used to it in the end, I miss it now :dapprove:

Any quieter and your car will sound like a Toyota Prius! Seriously though, if you can't live with it, take it back - hope it gets sorted with the minimum of fuss.

Doesn't sound that loud to me really - virtually every other car in the past I've had has been louder then that - only my 182 with standard exhaust is quieter!

I had a longlife on my 02 172 from cardiff branch back in 02/03, i think charlie fitted it who is now at prospeed, it was loud but its still on the car with the new owner to this day quality off it was great , it was boomy though,at m/way speeds it was tiresomeon the ears and used to set car alarms off in multistorey car parks and i asked for a quiet version too!!.

Managed to get back to Longlife today, Tony Banks the owner fella sorted it for me,.. I couldn't get to Leeds during the week so had to wait a few weeks for a Saturday appt.

He took the car for a test drive and I explained the boominess and general noise levels around 3k were too much for me. He 'adjusted' the rear silencer and gave it back after half an hour.

On turning the key the exhaust was rattling against something around the centre section, even after he'd told me he'd just test driven it...

So back on the ramps it went, and 5 mins later I was away.

The exhaust now sounds pretty much standard (HOW I'D WANTED IT) unless you boot it, when it sounds like a mini R26.R.

Quite fruity, and after a good drive around the sh1thole that is Leeds/Bradford I kinda grew to like it. If I drive normally it sounds normal, and if I press the loud pedal hard it barks a bit.
