  Focus ST
Hi Guys,

long time lurker, first time buyer.

I’ve owned a few performance cars,VXR, fiesta ST and just got rid of my Focus ST.

In the market for a 182, would prefer FF in inferno or RB. But really I’m just looking for a nice clean example with good service history, belts done etc and maybe a few mods.

Been looking for about a week now though and I cannot for the life of my tick all those boxes ? Are good examples just quite rare now or am I looking in the wrong places. Been on here, Facebook pages, marketplace, eBay. So far I’ve found 2 that kinda tick those boxes and the seller hasn’t responded.

Anyway, back to the hunt.....

Good cars are certainly becoming rarer and as prices steadily increase owners seem to be holding onto them. Inferno is quite a rare colour and RB has a colour tax applied these days so I hope you've got a healthy budget. You'll need patience to get into one that ticks your boxes.
You should post a wanted on the Clio Facebook or Instagram pages as this can bring some out of the woodwork.

Yeah I get the feeling that the people left with good examples are hanging on to them! Budget shouldn’t be too much of a problem I don’t think, would like to keep it around 3k but would stretch for a proper example. Think the only thing that will sting me is time, when the Focus gets picked up I’m without a car, so have a couple weeks max to track one down.

As above, the good examples are becoming harder and harder to find and the prices are rising, especially the RB tax..!

Good luck on your hunt!

I think for a good car £3k is going to be very bottom end now, especially with RB. An edgy RB with 100k + sold yesterday on eBay for £2850. My guess is it has at least another £2k needed to make it a ‘clean’ example. Inferno won’t be far off that either. From what i have seen of late you need to be spending about £4500-£5k to get a good RB. I’d guess (not seen one apart from a lovely one on FB) inferno will be a bit behind that, but not huge amounts. Ti and BG I think £3500+ to get a car relatively issue free. I bought a clean Ti 182 with 100k for under £3k but in the knowledge i would spend another £700+ on a full timing service, £400 on Turini’s and likely £1k for Recaro’s over the next 12 months. Not to mention the other stuff needed in preventative maintenance, the cars are getting older and starting to show it now! - I’m one of the weirdos who likes silver clios btw

Thats not to say you won’t get lucky, or you won’t find a cheaper example! but bitter experience has shown me ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ is very much a mantra that should be remembered when buying a 1*2

good luck, if I see anything I’ll post it up here for you.

reiterate all above really, good ones are getting hard to find thanks to being killed, tracked or kept hold of now.

I may well have the least valuable RB in the country now though but still wouldn't sell it for less than 3k in its current setup

I’ve clearly been away from the market too long. Didn’t realise Inferno and RB we’re getting that bad! Last time I looked the only one with a “tax” was LY.

I don’t need to be too firm with colour, as long as I get a relatively clean example with either belts done or if they’re not, that reflected in the price.

Ive been eyeing this up on eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254737982628

Looks relatively clean, fee desiresble mods. I would expect a further few pennies to freshen up brakes etc and absolutely £500 for Turinis. I guess I can hold off on the recaros and fit a set at a later date.

looks like it’s just going to be a case of upping the budget, which I have scope to do. Or being the first to pounce on a nice example.

That car looked relatively clean when I saw it listed however...
1) short MOT, yeah he says it should sail through, but they are hardly likely to say it’s going to fail
2) the photos are likely ages old, the front has had badges changed, washers removed etc. The fact the other pics are of the car dirty suggest they can’t be arsed to sell it properly!
3) it has a decat fitted, so check it comes with OE car as they are bloody expensive (hence many sold for scrap) cheap eBay CATS seem to work...kind of!
4) find out who did the Cambelt and dephaser...I have fallen foul of having a receipt that the owner of my old car tells me is bull s**t.

I bought my car for slightly less than that. Knowing it needs the belt service doing next year. I would rather get it done myself at a proper Renault specialist rather than off the back of someone’s say so. It’s going to be a big cost, I’m just trying to suss out now who I want to use and get it booked in as the wait is mind blowing for some of these guys.

  Focus ST
I messaged and pretty much covered the points you’ve made.

Short MOT is a point to think about, I asked if he’d consider putting a year on.

Pics are defo old cause you can see when the wiper blanks were added etc. I asked if he wouldn’t mind shooting a wee video for me (I’m 4 hours away so can’t go view)

I don’t mind decat cause I would think about sports cat forMOT.

And yeah I asked about belts / dephaser cause I want itdone by specialist!

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
£3k is about 'half' the budget you need for a RB / Inferno FF around 60-70k

Yeah I’m kinda getting that impression now. So yeah I either up the budget or look at a “less desirable” colour. Which isn’t the end of the world, I’m happy as long as it’s good nick.

Deohaser changed last year would indi ate belt changed too. Unless it was don't by an absolute fuckmuffin who swapped the pulley and reused the old belt while knocking the timing out by a week or two in the process.
It looks decent though and if there is a receipt for belts done last year by a reputable garage then it's a decent price too.

Yeah I would expect so, would need to double check. If no proof I would probably knock a bit off and get a specialist to do them, cause other than that it's a nice price and looks good.

I think I've found the 1 boys. Wasn't looking for ITBs but now I'm reading about them I WANT them lol. Obviously I expect to need to up the budget for it, but what could I expect to pay ? Don't want to bid cause I don't want to wait 9 days lol. And don't really know what kind of offer to make.

That looks great, still scope to put your own stamp on it as well. I didn’t think you could run ITB’s with aircon? So interested as to how it all fits together. God knows what it’s worth, I’m going to guess at over £5k 🤷🏻‍♂️Personally love the sound of ITB cars if nothing else, not driven one myself but throttle response is meant to be insane. I would personally want to know who did the engine work, what setup of ITB it has etc. As I understand it they don’t always make for great daily driver setup. But that looks likely a lovely ‘baked bean’ from the photos posted.

edit: I’d have to lose the horrid bonnet pins, tints and wheels but that’s just me

Yeah I still need to do research on the ITBs. They are KTEC ITBs and their Gen90 ECU, but messaging now to find out who actually done the work cause the add doesn't read as it being KTEC that actually done it.

Yeah it would be a daily for me, but at most when I'm actually at the office (which I haven't been for 8 months and probably won't be any time soon) I do 15 miles a day.

Don't make sense, why sell a car because you do very little mileage to buy one that more sensible? If I only did 2k a year I'd sell my Clio for a big V8 or a cobra rep or a rally slag or anything less sensible! Start at 5k and see what he says.

Quick update on my search (if anyone cares). I'm not stretching the budget to the current Inferno / RB prices, it's a weekend car and short trips to the shop. I don't need to be dropping 6k for a colour.

Got my eyes on a 172 cup in Iceberg. 108k, almost FSH, belts not due but being done this week anyway, KRT cat back, Bilstein B14, KTR top mounts, Turinis with brand new PS3's. Looks really clean apart from steering wheel peel, but tbh I will be looking for a snappy wheel anyway so not fussed.

£3.5k sound about right ?

Saw that on Facebook, chap is a trader. I thought it looked well enough and commented to that effect only to see some sarcastic comments. Which is the usual FB response!

Yeah I actually messaged him yesterday after seeing he previously had some stock.

I understand that it’s quite a decent price tag but it looks really well.

I thought it looked well and the fact it’s not blue makes it rare! I personally love a silver clio in the flesh! I’d buy it!😂 best do some research see if the car has much history around the scene! If that makes sense

Yeah I am just waiting on him getting back to me about who’s doing belts etc. I reckon with the mods it has like the coil overs and top mounts, someone must know of the car.

Exactly! I’d be tempted to offer him £500 less and get the belts done myself personally. I’d much prefer the satisfaction of someone well known fitting them. Also worth noting he is a dealer so HAS to offer you some warranty

Waiting to see who is doing the belts first, I honestly don’t mind them not being one of the well known specialists as long as the timing is sound it’s fine. That being said I would like some type of receipt cause if I don’t get it’ll massively affect resell.

Also yeah I’ll probably go in with a 3k offer and that would cover my new wheel lol.

Buy it, then you can join my "best colour for a 172 cup" club.

* sits back and waits for the abuse

I feel like you and I are bonding, so I won’t argue for the time being.

This could be the one though. Belts are being done by Rensport, who I believe are very well regarded!

Don't worry, you and I will bring him round :giggle:

Anyway, hope it you find the one soon.

  Focus ST
Did you buy it can see it’s sold? If not a RB has just gone on eBay. Needs a touch of work but looks a good base to start from
Yeah it was me, should hopefully pick it up next weekend! 200 mile drive so I’ll need to speak nice to the Mrs.

I seen the RB you mention but honestly it just cements the fact that I’m not willing to pay RB money. £3,900 for a car that needs another 2k minimum work. Not for me. Not for a colour.

I’m super happy with the Iceberg 172, looks really clean. Nice mods and that on it. It goes to Rensport this week for new belts etc so I am just excited now to pick it up.

Obviously the guys are going to get it looked over at Rensport too and see if needs anything else while it’s there.

Is it sacrilege to fire a leather rear bench and recaros in the cup ? I feel like that might anger the purists lol.

Good news (y)

I sprint mine so it has to stay standard apart from a very few things, like front seats. So I've got a pair of Evo Recaro Trendlines in mine. I have kept the original seats though.

Its recaros I would like in mine. I need rear seats so I feel like in order to match I need to get the rear bench too.

There isn’t too much I plan on doing. Front grill looks faded so will either bring that back or paint it. Needs a re trimmed steering wheel, maybe a sports cat, the exhaust trim needs to be carbon, as well as the bullets I think. Is sprayshack still a thing ? Been a while since I’ve been in the Clio game.

Pic of the new toy attached!
