New runaround - 1996 Renault Megane Coupe 2.0 16v

So picked this up yesterday after seeing it on here for rather cheap, been wanting a runaround for a while and as much as I could bear with the Cup throughout these winter months it would be easier just have a comfier car! Here's a few snaps...

Was a little suspect about it given the price but even if things didnt turn out as good as first thought I could of broke even by just selling the modified bits on it. Luckily it is a pretty good car, there is a few things to do to get it running perfect but i'm rather happy!

Just knocked over 122,000 miles but the engine runs sweet as a nut, pulls surprisingly well given the mileage/in comparison to the Cup and the chap had a Rolling Road printout of the car making 136bhp at the wheels so seems like a healthy engine! Came with 5 months tax and 10 months Mot, also has air-con but atm has the wrong heater motor so the air-con is disconnected (fine for this time of year!).

The car came with a few modifications also, most i'll be taking off to replace for standard bits to make a bit of money back on it. Anyways it has...

BMC CDA filter
Prima Racing cat-back exhaust
Omp strut brace
B&M shortshift
Lowered 40mm on unknown shocks+springs
Phase 2 Megane full black leathers
Sabelt 300mm steering wheel/horn push and boss kit
15" Scenic Steels with brand new Toyo T1-R's instead of the standard wheels

The car sounds pretty nice with the mods but for a daily I just want it as comfy as possible, the leather seats help that no end! Loving driving in comfort instead of bucket seats with head restraints, easy driving!

Got a few things planned for it, mainly standardising it and fixing a few things...

Sell aftermarket exhaust and fit standard exhaust that came with the car
Sell BMC CDA and get a cheap F7R airbox or Ph1 172 airbox and standard filter
Selling the scenic steels/tyres and fit 2118's off the Cup temporarily and find some standard wheels
New alternator belt
Eventually get an air-con heater motor for it
Set of front fogs
Source some interior plastics that are missing
Fit side spat back onto passenger side skirt
Then just a general tidy up of the exterior/interior (desticker/debadge and a decent clean)

Not bad for £450 though ;)

Cheers
Nick

should make a good daily. and when you bored of it can easily make your money back breaking it,

hows the drive/ride on these. i fancied one as run around for a while but never knew what they were like to drive.

He hasnt replaced it with anything yet from what I know, so you guys know the history of it? Never raced or rallied? ;)

Yeah I know Dave... He is a local :) seems a decent motor, especially for the price!

I am surprised he has fixed it so quickly from when he wrapped it around that tree last month!

Indeed about making my money back, will almost be free driving for the year!

Must admit I thought it would drive badly in comparison to the Cup/previous Mk1 16v's but it really is great to drive! Car feels very planted and handles well, will be even better once I sort out some better offset wheels for it! As for the engine its the F7R out of the williams bar the inlet manifold I believe, lovely power delivery with a reasonable amount of torque! I've always been biased to the F7R over the F4R, the engine character is much better and engine sound it makes over the F4R (which sounds crap!) All in all very happy with it! :)

i prefer the sound of a f7r but f4r was a better option for me when "upgrading" my valver.

yeah engine basic the same, but very similar to a f4r. think its main difference to a williams engine is head(big inlets valves, milder cams), chain driven oil pump, different inlet and exhaust manifold. surpose to be a better base for big power because of the bigger inlets and electronic ignition.

as said before should make a great daily when you sort the problems

these any good for you http://www.cliosport.net/forum/show...lver-style-megane-alloys-with-tyres-%A380-ono

Ha I made money on that splitter. Bought it for 2.50, sold to Adz who had the car at the time for £20. Then bought the car off him when it was fitted.

The car was great fun but time for me to move on. Need to save through 2011 so looking for something that drinks less. The only regret I have is selling it so cheap but had zero interest at £600 so had to do something.

UPDATE (already!) -

Managed to get myself hold of some standard 16" Coupe wheels and 2 tyres with them. Need a refurb and 2 tyres and were in business, got a Ph1 airbox for it as well so can now get rid of the BMC! Hopefully get this exhaust changed over to the standard in the next couple of days also.

Boost? sure mine weigh's atleast 350kg plus so it it just compensates for its fat arse lol!

Shall get a build thread up when i'm back in the Uk, You should see the stickers that previous owner put on it :dead:, they came off first thing lol

Other than that it really is cracking car! certainly a good stump of power/torque in standard form, let the up-grades begin

Yeah look forward to the build thread mate.
Look forward to seeing the direction you take with it.

Staines meet is getting a little varied now, megane's, Volvo's. I nearly bought a mk2 Fiesta randomly recently lol

Oh yes James!

Unfortunately there'll be no 3rd gear drags, I may be a good 350kg lighter however you'll soon enough have double the power and potentially 3 times the amount of torque as me! :( However I could always dust off the Cup and school you! ;)

Update -

Took a trip across to Ashford Kent today, sourced all of the interior bits that were missing and also an air-con heater motor off a lovely chap off Renault-Online.Net forum. Exhanged this all for an OMP strut brace which came with the Megane, little did I know that the F7R megane came with standard strut brace so he gave me that also! So did pretty well there and the Megane is another step closer to being standard/how I want it to be!

Also destickered the rear of the car, just need to finish off taking the side window stickers out and thats another job off the list! Having already done over 600 miles in it it's mega dirty so needs a good clean but just loving driving in comfort atm!
