Found a coolant leak
So started to strip it down
Problem turned out to be a cracked inlet manifold, with water leaking into the engine bay and collecting as in the pic above and also into cylinder two, giving the steam cleaning effect below.
Whilst the head was off it was sent away for pressure testing which it passed, a very thin skim (minimum head thickness rules next season) and a good clean up!
Noticed a small valve mark in piston one, which happened under previous ownership and is too small to cause any issues (hopefully).
New (as in uncracked) inlet manifold prepared and the engine rebuilt....
... with lime green silicone hoses...
