Newbie - Looking to buy a 182

Hi Guys, I am new to the forum and new to the world of Renault. I had a Clio Williams when I was younger, but have mainly been involved in the Classic Audi Performance cars (and Aircooled VW) for the last 10 years or so.

I have been reading quite a few threads on here as I am looking to purchase a 182 / 182 Cup as a toy. I have a company car but want something fun at sensible money. I have had a play in a 172 and a 182 on the track and was sold on the 182. I am dealing with a couple of people by PM here at the moment, but I want something mechanically spot on rather that a Shiny Shower.

Any pitfalls or cars to steer clear of? Any advice will be gratefully received.

See you around the forums ;)

There'll be numerous threads on "common things to look out for" etc. on here, I'm sure the search feature will give you hours of reading! http://www.cliosport.net/forum/search.php

Main points are generally:

* No reason why these cars can't go well above 100k miles if they've been looked after, so as it seems you've realised buy on mechanical condition and service history rather than mileage.
* Cambelts & dephaser pulleys are something to really look out for. Expensive job (£650 ish all in, cam & aux belt kit, camshaft seals, dephaser pulley, oil etc.). There's been plenty of issue of incorrect timing etc so preferably done by an Independant Renaultsport Specialist.
* Virtually all other problems, if they occur, are cheap to fix.
* Pair of rear discs inc. wheel bearings are £90, exhaust mounts are rubbish but circa £30 IIRC, heatshields come loose constantly but free to fix, cat/manifold joints are also made of cheese and are £20, standard mild steel exhaust system (there's an exhaust related trend here...) falls apart after a few years so an aftermarket stainless steel one is preferable (factor £330 upwards for a catback system into your idea of costs)
* Missing xenons on the FF & missing bumper stickers (have a search) are signs of a huge front end impact and wonky chassis... or just someone not liking a front end full of stone chips and forgetting to replace the stickers after a respray.

Oh that's a point. People tend to get confused with models:

* Standard 182 includes all interior goodies etc.
* 182 Cup is poverty spec interior and comes with cup chassis and cup spoiler pack.
* Standard 182 + £200 optional cup chassis + £200 optional spoiler pack gets you best of both worlds - the better suspension/steering setup, nicer (IMO) colour wheels and better (IMO) looking rear spoiler but retains all the creature comforts like xenons and climate control.

I'd be amazed if there wasn't a thread detailing all of this stickied actually.

Welcome and happy hunting!

Pretty much as above, usual stuff with buying a car to check. The cambelt is the main expense so see if that's been done (correctly!) or factor it in your budget to get done if its due a change

Hmmmm. Interesting turn of events. Looks like I have just secured a 197!!! Wasn't part of the plan but quite happy with the decision.

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
Make sure you check the following

Gearbox
Steering rack/components for clunking
Listen for exhaust blow- as manifolds crack
Cup chassis ideally
make sure it has 2 keys
Cambelt is due on them all...

Yes. Done that.

It's just had new gearbox due to third gear synchro issue,
All the belts and service done
Overly cared for and no expense spared
A few upgrades

They have just purchased a 200 which was the only reason for sale

Thanks
