newbie, trying to decide 172ff vs 182 cup

  audi allroad
hello all :)

Just got a new job with a car allowance. I'm big into my bikes having owned some mental machinery kawasaki zx10r's etc.. however other than my old pug 205 1.9 gti my car history has been more boring..

However i've decided it's time for something fun. I'm trying to decide between a 172ff and a 182 with both cup packs.. I've been doing my reading, but still can't decide if the extra for a 182 is worth it over a full fat 172...

Any advice welcome :)

cheers
mark

Firstly, Welcome along.

Secondly there is no such thing as a 172ff. Its a 172 or a 172 cup ;) If your looking at a 182 with both cup packs, that'll be a 182ff.

IMO, the 182's come in better colours, have a few extra toys ie CC and ESP (these only came on later 172s/rare), they're newer and general looks wise look a bit more aggressive and purposeful than the 172. Really depends what your budget is.

^^ + what do you want it for? If it's for driving thrills/experience get the 172 cup... If you want a sporty Clio with lots of toys and a nicer choice of colours (and sportier looking exhaust) get a 182ff... Don't bother with the 182 cup. It loses all the goodies but gains nothing :)

TBH, any of them will make you want to take the twisties home. More so in a cup/ph1 172/trophy ;) But all very pleasing to drive in anger and give a good fuel eco return.

Yeah a ph1 is the older shape;

And this is a ph2 (exactly like mine);

Btw, I haven't even looked at these cars, so not recommending them, just showing the shapes.

I have a Ph2 In Monaco Blue, love it. Love the Xenons, half leather, auto lights and wipers, climate control, cruise and esp. But thats just me.

Where are you from mate?

The 172's are all Mk2s .. ph1 looks like this:

Ph2 looks like this:

I've owned both .. I preferred the dash/interior in the Ph2 .. That was it on plus points over the Ph1. The Ph1's interior never bothered me however.

Ph1 in my experience is cheaper to buy, cheaper to insure, cheaper tax (if we're splitting hairs), cheaper to run - 45-50mpg plays 30-35. 15" wheels are lighter, tramline less, and the same make tyres are generally cheaper compared to the 16". Cable throttle is SO much nicer to drive than the computer in the ph2. Ph1 also felt quicker, it's lighter too.

I think the Ph1 looks better .. it's further from the 'standard' 1.2 in terms of agressive looks. They're getting rarer too.

Still.. it's your car/money/opinion. Go drive a ph1 172, a ph2 172, and a ph2 182 and make your mind up ;)

deffo want a phaseII as my main car is an audi a6 allroad so i like my toys.... trophy's seem few and far between, especially in my budget!

currently it's trying to figure out whether the extra for a 182 is worth it compared to a ph2 172..

Just go round to a view garages and be interested, they will let you take them for a spin. I tried 5 or 6 before I bought mine.

Toys ?!

Cruise is the only thing worth having, but I've survived 10 years of driving without it. Same goes for traction or stability control .. absolutely no need in a FWD hatch. Ph1's have ABS and a/c as standard.

I find the ESP/TC annoying as it cuts power too much sometimes (it can easily be switched off though thankfully), but the Climate control and cruise control are something I've grown to love after having neither in my previous car. Plus the auto xenon headlights are cool. But tbh I think just the twin rear exhausts are something that pushed me to a 182, as well as the colour Racing Blue!
