Night Vision Goggles

anyone ever used these, real ones, not the ones that shine an infrared light out but the ones that gather in all available light like the military use?

I was at animal kingdom the other night in florida and was having a meal and you can go out onto the terrace and view the animals and its was about 10pm so they gave me night vision and OMG, I was blown over by how good they are, lights everything up so bright and there was next to no light at all.

I was very impressed, unfortunately they are quite expensive at about £1500 but if you ever get the chance have a go!

Both are NVG's

Have used active goggles and a PNV scope.

Both were the shizz (although the scope was better, shooting targets in the pitch black half a mile away :D)

I bought a monocular type one to take to Africa last year, worked fantastic in total darkness, top fun watching lions prowling around our camp.

i'm in the raf and have had a go with the ones our pilots use, which look just like the ones out of splintercell, and they are amazing they also use a finger pointer which they use for pointing out targets to each other when flying which is also pretty gucci when viewed through night vision goggles.

yeah this was a scope too, i just keep calling it night vision goggles for some reason.

if i thought i would ever use one i would get one but i can't really see the point, it would just be one of those gadget impulse buys, i nearly bought a Sony AIBO dog for 1k once..................

Both have their benefits though.

PNG's need a natuarl source of light so in caves or total darkness dont work.

Whilts actives give a better veiw even in total darkness but if someone has some nvgs can see your light source like a trch in the night.

Night Vision Goggles or Personal NVG (NVG/PNG) amplify ambient light, be it natural or artificial. Infra red torch creates light that is invisible to the naked eye but can be picked up by NVG/PNG's. So if you are working in total darkness i.e. in a cave or inside a building, you must use IR torches or IR cylume.

Some NVG's come with IR light installed, especially ones used in the RAF (helps when trying to read the instruments).

99.9% of night vision aids are in green, because the eye can distinguish more shades of green than any other colour.
