No oil flow after fitting engine!

  172 cup, Impreza P1
Got the engine back in and all connected up and primed the turbo feed and oil cooler and lines.

I disconnected the coil pack and fuel pump and removed the spark plugs so the was no compression. After cranking the thing 6 times for 20 secs each time there is still no oil flow to the turbo feed which is making me think there is no oil flow at all.

Is this normal or is there an airlock somewhere or something wrong with the oil pump?

Cheers for any help.

I pre-filled the filter before cranking.

The engine was getting a full bottom end rebuild and I've now fitted a mocal laminova oil cooler via a non thermostatic sandwich plate.

I've had a few engines refuse to build pressure until running in the past. under cranking they're only doing about 3-400rpm usually.

Oil cooler could be exacerbating the issue. Take it out of the equation, it's just more to fill and pressurise.

Thanks Danny, I'll give that a try in the morning.

Was just scared to start it if it never got pressure it would trash the engine. How long would you think it should take to build pressure and should I just leave at idle until I know there is oil flowing?

if you have used decent assembly lubes, then you'll be ok for a good 15-20 seconds before any bearing damage. It should only take 2-3 seconds after starting to get pressure. But I think you'll be ok with the cooler removed, so try that first

I used redline assembly lube so should be ok I guess.

I'll remove the cooler first and give it a try. Fingers crossed you're right mate!

Had the same with mine, when i installed turbo i cranked for a good minute and nothing was coming out the oil drain. Fired it up while clenching my ass and hay presto it started draining out.

Fire it up, it'll be fine ;)
