North West Scotland - Plockton, Applecross & Isle of Skye

Last weekend, me and a few others off here took the trip North to the Applecross/Skye area of Scotland.

We met in Fort William on the Friday evening with the rain coming in at full force giving the distinct impression that summer had finally arrived. We drove on the A87 North of Fort William to the small village of Duirinish near Pockton/Kyle of Lochalsh where we hired some lodges for the weekend.

On the Saturday, we carried on up the A87 over on to the Isle of Skye. With the weather improving throughout the day, we did a full loop of the island, through places such as Broadford, Staffin, Uig and Portree where we stopped for lunch. The roads on Skye can be extremely enjoyable but large stretches are single track littered with hired Hyundais therefore the evening may be the best time to enjoy the roads at there full potential. Anyway, pictures on Skye-

After lunch, we drove back over to the Mainland and proceeded to Applecross over the Bealach na Ba (Pass of The Cattle). On the way there, visibility was severely reduced due to fog so we really could not enjoy our surroundings. After dinner at The Applecross Inn however the sun put in a rare appearance and on the way back down, we realised that it was worth the trip. Full of hair-pin bends, splendid views and straight sections which put a huge grin on your face. We even went back on the Sunday, but went a different route through Kinlochewe and Torridon, round the Peninsula and approached Applecross from the East over an un-classified road. Here are some of the pictures:

An finally on the way back I stopped off in Oban on my way back to Glasgow. Took the A87, A838 over the Connell bridge and A85 into Oban

Hopefully you have made it to the end of this through my endless waffle. Any comments welcome. No doubt Fraser, Michael and Stu will have some pictures which they will add later.
Cheers, Al

I was up Torridon at the same time for some mountainbiking. We were camping/vanning....... it was grim! Awesome area though, did wish I had the Clio on the way up/down!

Looked a good trip.pity bout the weather though.

Great roads and scenery up that way as was there a week ago in the trophy.

Wasnt keen on the Applecross road even although the views from the top looking east were impressive.

I really liked the road around Glen coe.

Glen Coe is a nice run.

There's cracking roads on the way up to achnasheen. My favourite roads, long straights, long sweeping corners and you can see everything. Where all the windscreens got cracked ;)

Did you? What were you in or on?

I was in ultra blue megane.. its actually a 175 dci, i love the place and visit every year. as already mentioned there are some great driving roads, just a bit rough in places especially if your cars lowered;)
