Oh deary me! What a shame! Heads gone! Valve timing unit help needed.

The garage just got back to me after the AUX belt went 3 days after i bought the car and the day before i got a new one fitted and they say the valves are shot(absolutely gutted!).I see a whole new head for sale on here and i plan on buying that,but then the garage says i need a new valve timing unit which is £125 from renault?Im not sure what this is to be honest and if i can get it cheaper elsewhere?

I'm guessing they mean the timing tools to re-time the cambelt, as they are around that price.

Cheers guys,yer im gutted,the car was great for the first 2 days and i was supposed to move out the day after the belt was meant to be fitted but that got put back as i didnt have a car sorted for it!

My dads helping me out with the costs but he cant afford to throw money at it and neither can i,to be honest the car was worth £2200 when i got it,a new head is going to cost id have thought coming upto £700ish to fit?Its tempting to see how much the cars worth in current condition and see if its actually worth doing the work!

If i sold it for £1600 and spent an extra £600 on another id be £100 better off then fitting a new head!

I dont know to be honest,im just venting lol.

And cheers foxy,is this something that if i took it to a renault specialist they wouldnt have to buy?

Dephaser has gone up in price on 1st Jan and even further with the VAT increase :dapprove:

Dependant on cost the car will be going to Fred to work his magic and fit R20CWHs head to the car.On the bright side,new valves might add a couple of horses!

Even worse,the local garage who i was relying on being cheap are now refusing to touch it as they dont want the responsibility of starting it up and it going bang again.

You can buy running engines off ebay for under a grand, there where quite a few the last time I looked (about 3 weeks ago).
No garage should be charging that much, unless of course they simply do not want the job so are increasing the price to make it worthwhile for them to do a job they dont want to.

I am having new valves and some headwork done to my 172 and am only paying £350 labour, which is more realistic IMO.

To be fair,the price includes trailering my car to the garage,but its still steep,and well out of my price range,the only option is to either learn to do it myself or find somewhere local that will do it for cheaper.

A local independant garage that is competent will easily be able to work on your engine, yes the 172 is a bit different in some respects to what they are probably used to, but its not rocket science...

Hope you can find somewhere cheaper/nearer and get back on the roads soon bud

Cheers overboost,i saved up for the car for a long time and my Mum and Dad paid some towards it as my 21st birthday present so i was hoping to keep the car for a long time as its already quite sentimental but so far its been one big f**k up!

If i cant find someone to do the work for cheap ill start reading up on how to do it myself.

Remember everyone that a cambelt kit is £110, Aux belt kit £40odd, head kit and head bolts £50, oil + filter £30, Anti-freeze £5 so it's at least £220 in parts before anyone spends 6 hours doing it.

hope it gets sorted. You may not need the whole head redone, depending on how bad the damage was you might get away with new valves and milling/testing the old head.

I had a head gasket failure on my 172 and was quoted £800 to have it fixed and belts/kits sorted!

Bought myself a 182 engine and manifold off of ebay for £300 and fitted it in 2 days myself!

Food for thought chap!!
