Oil advice and recommendations here

5w-40 is ideal grade for the car, its not too thin at all. Infact you should find it listed in the handbook.

The Halfords own is not a true synthetic but a hydrocracked mineral oil, just moving to a genuine synthetic should yield an improvement.

Have a look at the Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40.

Cheers

Guy.

Cheers, and thanks for the email as well. ;) Much appreciated!

Currently have lots of fully synthetic 5w40 in the garage, will this be ok to use?

Also how often do you recomend to do oil changes. Renault say every 2 years / 18k which seems too excessive to me!

Thanks,
Lee.

What oil would be reccomended for;
Mk2 172
ITG Maxogen fitted with CAF
Road use (daily)

Also, which oil filter is for a Mk2 172 (November 2003)?

I think Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 is also a hydrocracked oil is it not?

5w-40 synthetic is ideal, Motul, Fuchs and Silkolene are my favorites.

Use the filter look up guide on my site to tell you which one you need :)

Guy, why is the Motul 300v a bit overkill for the 172 cup ?

I have been running this one for a couple of years now, reduced all enginenoise at cold start immediately , compared to the Reno recommended Elf oil .

I'm using 10w40 , car has got pretty wild cams and raised rev limit

am i okay with my oilchoice ? (always get the stuff at a friendly tuner with a 45% discount :approve:) Or would/should the 5w40 Motul be my next choice ?

is my Cup OK to run on 5w30 fully synth? Hope so 'cause that's what the numpties at my garage put in last time

The 300v is not overkill, its a great oil but very expensive.

10w-40 is also fine, as is 5w-40 the choice is yours.

We can recommend brake fluids and it's a bit simpler than with oils. A standard 172/182 etc uses a DOT4 brake fluid, so these are fine

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-741-castrol-response-dot-4-synthetic-brake-fluid.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-892-mot...-actuated-brake-and-clutch-systems-dot-4.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-855-silkolene-dot-4-universal-brake-clutch-fluid.aspx

If you want something a little better as you drive hard or use it on the track a bit have a look at these

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-742-castrol-response-super-dot-4-synthetic-brake-fluid.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-893-mot...-hydraulic-actuated-brake-and-clutch-sys.aspx

If you want one that is for a car that is used specifically on the track, these

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-894-mot...raulic-actuated-brake-and-clutch-systems.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-1078-mo...raulic-actuated-brake-and-clutch-systems.aspx
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-862-sil...gh-boiling-point-competition-brake-fluid.aspx

and if you own an F1 car

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-740-castrol-srf-racing-brake-fluid.aspx

For most people a DOT4 or Super DOT4/DOT 5.1 will be absolutely fine. You only need to go to one of the racing brake fluids if the car's main purpose is track use

WHile your on..

Can you just confirm

5w 40 fully synth Motul/ silkoline etc
75w/90 motul or silkoline full synth for gearbox

RS 182 - 64k - Used on track and mainly fast road..

Thanks

Hello Oilman
I have just purchased a load of fuchs titan 5w 40 will this be ok for my car that is used mainly for fast road? As i have read somewhere it is a hydrocracked oil.
50k 172 cup
remapped
Decat
stailnless exhaust and itg filter.

  182FF with cup packs
182 21k miles
RSTuner Ron98 Remap

50 miles a day, 45 of them motorway.

From cold it is only ever 1 or 2 miles to the motorway.

Previous owner only put 18k miles on it in 3 3/4 years.

What a handy thread!

I would like to replace the gearbox oil in my 182, can you recommend me a high quality oil please and if possible the quantity I require!

49k miles.
mods include Remap, decat, filter
fast road use with the very occasional track use in the future.

Thanks mate

3.1L ;) But you can never "fully" drain the box while its still on the car...

Serviced my girlfriends 172 last week and 3L of gearbox oil was just right! (be careful with the refil cap/screw though as they can get brittle over time, with them being plastic... stupid idea to have them made in that material IMO!!
