Oil Change

  SLK 350
Right, my oil light came on the other day so i put a litre top-up in, but tomorrow i've booked into national tyres to get it changed (not worth getting my hands dirty/knuckles slashed) as they are still doing their £10-£20 oilc change which includes oil and filter.

Just got off the phone to the fella and he asked me what model the clio was, told him it's a 172 and he then said the Hypergrade £15 (semi-syn) would be better than the QXR £20 (fully-syn). Seemed odd and questioned him but he seemed dilagent he was correct.

So answers on a postcard please, should i got for semi or fully synthetic oil?

The car is on 45k too.

Erm I always thought fully synth. Hell, if I'm running that in my 1400cc mk1 I think it'd be wise to fill a 172 up being a higher performing engine and all??

Indeed, just wanted to check. Both types of oil have their up's and down's apparently but generally speaking fully synthetic is a better grade.

Having said that i guess it depends on the manufacturer but cheers for the replies, just called them after phoning my old man and told them i wanted the QXR synthetic oil.

He was astounded that they provide oil and filter for £20 though lol, and having changed the oil on my old 1.2 i can see why, that was a jame blunt to do and ended up stabbing a screw driver through the filter. Can only think its even worse on the 172.

My next question:

Am i right in saying that the gearbox oil and the engine oil are seperate entities on the Clio as opposed to a single integral system?

If so how do oyu go about changing the gear oil on a 172 and it is an easy manual job with a decent set of tools?

Cheers.
