Oil where it shouldn't be! (valver)

I picked up my valver on friday and have been fiddling around, I took the no. 4 spark plug out to check the condition of them and when I pulled the socket out it had quite a large amount of oil around it, I'm guessing that it shouldn't be there! What do you think is likely to have gone? There is no mayonaise on the oil cap so I'm hoping the headgasket is alright. Also what oil pressure should be getting when cold and warm.

the oil around the plug mate might be that the rocker cover gasket has failed and is leaking as this is higher that where the plugs sit! as for the mayo what was the last owner like? did he/she do loads of small trips or long ones all the time? the mayo affect is caused by water vapour in the oil, check ur coolent for loss and oil films on the water top. if this is ok its safe to say the head gasket is ok but get it checked out anyway!

I have oil on my spark plugs and mine has just had the head gasket done. It should be fine, you just need a new rocker cover gasket. They're cheap to get and easy to fit so you might as well do it.

Make sure you clean the plugs and leads as well to get all of the oil off.

Thanks for the reply. Where is the best place t get a new gasket from? Could you tell me how to replace the old one please? And also what is the best thing for cleaning the oil off?

Its definately the rocker mate.
Rocker gasket you can get from renault, euro car parts, gsf. Just take the plugs out and give them a clean with some kitchen towel, makes for a better connection. Rocker gaskets are a piece of piss to change;
remove spark plug cover, undo the 3 10mm bolts holding the HT leads shute on, lift that out, then undo all 10mm holding on the rocker cover. Remove the rocker cover and the old gasket. slide the new gasket in and bolt everthing back on!

Had the same problem on my old 16 16v

Make sure you get the surfaces of the rocker cover/head nice and clean when putting the new gasket on and use decent sealant.

I'm in North Devon, Doesn't sound too tricky to change. When you say a decent sealant where would I use that and what would you reccomend?

no its not at all..
when people fill thier oil up thier clumsy and spill it everywhere, it runs down the middle of the head and down the spark plug wells, when you take the plugs out it appears thier covered with oil.
nothing to worry about.

Well on my valver it certainly wasn't me being clumsy as I used a funnel to fill the car with oil and it still leaked into the plug recesses.

Received my new gasket today, do the bolts on the rocker cover have to be done up to certain torque, if so what is it?

They will have a torque setting

Don't know what it is though....someone must have a manual somewhere
