Old iTouch, replacement?

My girlfriend has a 2nd gen ipod touch which is having some problems with the Wi-Fi.

If i took it into an Apple store would they have to send it away for repair or do they have older ipod itouch models to give as replacements?

not particularly that old yet, i imagine it'd be repaired regardless and have a shed load of spares for when this sort've stuff happens!
