One for yozza or techies (eddie)

  RB 182 & Lotus Evora
Hey guys,

Just been to ashby cars in cranfield. Must say excellent service. For genuine parts and stuff there price was good. They are a clio specialist and use renault parts etc.

They charged me the follwing :

89.00 for cambelt kit includes tensioners
74.00 for water pump
17.00 for Aux Belt

Then 300 For labour....

Ok labour...fair enough....cambelt kits seems a little cheap for the price ive seen them go for, but they assure me everything is genuine and all boxes are renault out the back so i believe them, but still skeptical.

They have taken the car for a 10miles test drive to...and it does drive alot better than it did before! or maybe its because ive been stuck in a 1.2 for 2 days that it seems better lol.

Anyway sorry to the point...

On opening of bonnet, there is an ever so slight whistle when pushing the throttle down. Can only hear it with bonnet open. Im assuming this is just the tensioners settling in and they should quieten within a few miles or so....I dont believe the tensioners are toooo tight....its not really THAT loud, but obviously read around a bit and ideally want confirmation.

When i say whistle i mean actually a whistle...not a whirr etc..ideally i just want confirmation this is fairly normal....as i dont want to take it back and drive that 1,2 s**t bucket for another day while they loosen/slacken it off a bit.

cheers fellas;)

oh forgot to ask...the aux belt...im assuming this hasnt got a tensioner that needs replacing as well...i asked for all tensioners and camblet tensioners to be completed...but its not on the reciept that the aux belt tensioner was replaced... ?

I'm assuming you don't own a cup if so then the tensioner is done altomaticall the tensioer for the aux belt is £80 or so it is just checked though when the AUX belt is changed.

If you have a 172 Cup it might be they have set the belt to tight.

Does the garage know how to do then cambelt do they have all the right tools etc?

I woulnd't worry to much though check the air box is all on right though.

If you dont have a cup, they should have changed the tensioner on the aux belt. It could be the little pulley at the bottom, this is more exposed to the elements and could be making a little noise, it is accesible if you want to try greasing the inside, i take it the noise is coming from this side in the bay??

The cambelt kit last time I looked is £120, consists of the belt and the 3 tensioners/rollers. Does the part number show on the receipt as renault do sell just the belt seperatly.

I had a bit of whine from the aux belt when I changed mine even though its auto-tensioned, went away after about 40 miles I think. I assume it was just the belt etc bedding in a bit.

I have a 172 FF ph2. Ive driven around 30 miles noise still remains. Its a whistle when i accelerate, it cant be heard after a certain revs probably because of the GDI. I was told it was the complete cambelt kit to include tensioners.....when i asked about the price, i was told he can just get them very cheap....im tempted to see if he can get me another so i can sell it on and also see what parts he gets for that 89.00! Saying that not sure if that 89.00 is including VAT???? So maybe....it is about right. No part numbers as such was a written receipt.

im going to keep the car few a 100miles more, if the noise hasnt died down then ill take it back....i dont want to put them out for something so minor as the car is running superb....better than i feel it had been.

Just concerened they are gonna steal my car for another day and try and charge me further.

I think I have a similar sound.

Started when I got my air-con repaired (pumped died - also noise related) They also fitted a new aux-belt. The sound started with low volume and is only noticeable at low revs < 3000 rpm. Now after 10000km the sound has increase and is noticeable incar. (I was told one aux makes more sound then the other) (I worked at a Renault dealer and I know they do)

But now the sounds starts ignoring me, so I getting my AUX-belt and tensioner / roller replace again. (At anohter garage) (£270)

Anyway the sound didn't cause any harm to the car, If you can live with it, you could leave it, else you could try and make the mechanic re-do the aux free of cost. Or reduced cost.

BTW with my car I think it's the lower roller like davebem indicates
