easy now people:cool:,

looking for HONEST opinions on phase 2 172.

looking for a new motor, currently got a punto gt, hense the name, but now looking for something newer.

now me punto aint bad chipped etc, nowt in it with a standard 172 on a straight line, but corners maybe another matter

so what are they like to own.. ive heard and read about dodgy top mounts, funny clunks and rattles that makes me fiat sound as well built as a bmw in comparason!?

on a new car i wouldnt have said that this was a good omen!, that said i think they look trick as fook

The 172 rattles are only sounds.... 172 build quality is good, but that is sometimes confused with attention to detail....

Poor attention to detail means a rattle and squeak here and there... The choice of materials and clips cause it, but nothing to worry about IMO.

so whats this i hear about the top mounts of the suspension then?

i take it they are all affected, or is it just certain versions etc etc..

i hear the dealers do a fix on this? whats this involve?

why a mk1 mate? i prefer the look of the mk2, isnt performance the same?

mk1 is very slightly quicker, not really noticeable!

id go for a mk2 personally, look better imo, check out the for sale section, theres a few in there!

Fun fairly economical cars with a good spec as standard. At the minute you can pick up some real bargin 172s since the 182 arrived. Very comfy to drive round town and at ease on the moterway with the 2 litre capacity.

in my opinion the Mk1 was the original and best 172... it does to the Clio2s what the williams did to the Clio1s. The Mk1 was somethin special within the range cos it looked different to all other clios. Im a firm believer that the originals/classics are the best.

think im gonna have to test one, i know for a fact itll be more refined than me punto, but i dont know if ill miss that turbo kick... are these things reasonably tuneable? and more importantly reliable? belive it or not ive had no major mechanical problems with me punto. Its pushin 170 at the moment, and obviously thats pretty tuned, where as a 172 has around that as standard., so at the moment power wise they are roughly equal. So what can these things be tuned to reliable like? not talking silly mods, what would you recommend that works.

  182 & LY Clio 220 ed


The Mk1 came with a lighter alloy bonnet, thats the main difference afaik. There is a 0.1 second difference to 60mph...also, the Mk1 should be cheaper, although potentially higher mileage. If you can afford the Mk2, then I would go there...if its under 3 years old, then you should get the remainder of the warranty should any problems arise (peace of mind). Good luck with the choice.

IK and exhaust would improve the mid-range, and raise power slightly, but it does show.

Same questioned as asked by every soon to be ex-turbo owner.... unfortunately F4R tuning isnt quite as easy (as in you wont get much from IK and zorst!). People on here have had good results, albeit not necessarily in peak power with a sealed induction kit (Viper/BMC CDA),Rsport ECU and de-cat/cat back zorst...... That lot should see you around 180 ish (provided you had the full quota to atart with, but thats a different story!)

Hillpower also do a replacement manifold which should help things along.

After that Im afraid its Headwork/Cams/Mapped ECU etc etc

Oh and BB tuning are currently testing thier turbo kit......:devilish:

As for reliability, the 172 doesnt seem bad at all.....

Over 60% of the mark2 is different to the mk1. Including gearing, intake, suspension, wheels size etc etc...

clios pull from 5k nicely from what i know, but as said above, what you guys gettin top speed wise?

btw i dont like type rs look too big, dont like the gay headlights and still too dear to buy

yeah ik sealed bmc is cheaper and maybe slightly better than viper, if you dont mind loud try find supersprint race system with decat suspension just eibach springs unless you go coilovers
 


to look for not alot really just find one thats had the work done on it like 4 k rattle topmounts engine mounts etc etc etc
