Paint shades

i searched for this but couldnt find anything, ive seen a few times this has been mentioned that different paints can come in various shades, which will basically determine whether your colour match to your car will be good or rubbish. I was just wondering whether any of the other letters/numbers on the sticker where your paint code is found relates to the shade or whether its purely luck down to the place you get it mixed up getting it right. for example my paint code is MV632 - gris boreal, is that all i can give them and just hope for the best.
