Painting Tutorial?

  2002 Clio 1.2 Dyn GOMEZ
Hi guys,
iv been lurking for a while, as you do, and thought it about time to come out in the open. Some absolutely stunning examples within the club, cant wait to go to a meeting. Ill get some pics on of my lil ole 1.2 16v Dyna when i get home in 2ish weeks.

Anyway, onwards to the question. I was just wondering if there was a painting tutorial around at all? I know this sounds daft and im pretty aware (i think) of the procedure needed to paint stuff (sand, primer, paint, sand, paint, sand, clear coat - is that laquore?) but im one of those people who when it comes to important things such as my car i really wanna get it right.

Anyways, any advice would be great.

Tbh i dont even have my car atm (im in the West Midlands, car is in Devon), and im on a student budget (plenty of beans to trade for car parts) but i would eventually like to paint the engine cover silver and maybe colour code the bumpers and side stripes. I was also thinking of taking a leaf from Middo and painting my 16v badge on the side silver with black lettering.

Thought i would start small and work my way up.
Colour coding worth it?

What do you guys think? Yay or Nay?

(the cars black btw)

Yeah mate i have a black 2002 1.2 dynamique and i'm a student aswell, iv'e colour coded the whole of the car apart from the door handles and middo is doing my 16v badges silver this week. I was lucky enough to get the colour coding done at 30quid cause i know a person but you looking at around 120 -200 for the whole lot, middo will do the badges for a tenner.

So i think yay, also get some 182 wheels, i'm doing that in the summer.

Dude that is so funny you have the EXACT same ideas as me, wheels an all. LoL. What does your mate do? How hard is it to do it yourself?

LoL, Where abouts are you at uni?
I might get middo to do a job on mine when my next loan kicks in.
Ta dudes

Well he is my next door neighbour, manager of a bodyshop i think. From what i have heard it isn't to difficult to do yourself but if you don't get the exact colour match it will look a different colour in the light, you obv know where the paint code on the car is i am guessing? Cause take that to halfords and they will mix it for you.

I am not actually at uni yet cause i did an extra year at college, i am in Sutton Coldfield, which uni are you based at?

Oh right. I phoned my Dad this morn and i think my uncle (one uncles a mechanic, the other converts horse boxes and paints them - very handy!) can get it done for me, probably for a crate of beers, lol. I dont know where the colour code is but that is coz my car is down south atm, i havent seen it at all yet other than photos.

Im based in Coventry atm, 3rd year automotive design. Doing a placement at Land Rover (Gaydon) in three weeks. Cant wait.

Anybody else got any other input?
How easy is it to do the side badge like middo does?

If you can get a Bodyshop to do the Bumper Plastics that would be best, You could get CC'd Side Mouldings from a Breakers off a Black 172, That's what I did on the GF's Black Dynamique and I Painted her Badges myself, Anthracite and Black (Car is Dirty and a Poor Pic but you get the Idea, CC'd Door Mouldings also :D)

Painting Badges is fairly easy if you just take your time!

What steps did you go through for the side badges?

I didnt even think about the breakers for side strips! Me's thinks as soon as the black devil is up here i go hunting for west midlands renault breakers yard! Woot! That would be great actually as i want a rear bumper from a 182. That will fit straight on right?

Yep Rear Bumper will fit straight on, You getting a 182 Look Exhaust??

Just Sand down thoroughly,
Panel Wipes to get it all clean,
Primer (Multiple Light Coats) Leave overnight,
Wet Sand down using 1200 Grade Wet'n'Dry, Let dry again,
Spray Anthracite Colour(Light Coats again) Leave overnight again,
and I personally find it best to ever so carefully rough up the raised Lettering and then using a Fine Art Brush to paint the Letters,
Leave overnight again ,
Laqcuer(Light Coats again, Do plenty of coats for a deep finish, I didn't do enough coats on the GF's Badges :( )
Leave overnight again and then Fit
