Parts Required For Brake Caliper Refurb.

Hey guys,

I'm planning on refurbishing my front brake calipers myself, I'm just wondering what parts are required?

Planning on getting a Bigg Red rebuild kit http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-Cli...r-Seal-Piston-Repair-Kit-BRKP87-/271651814388 which consists of the rubber seals and pistons.

Is there anything else required or recommended that needs replaced/renewed?

I've read about caliper slider pins, are these available from Renault?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Saves using a wire brush attached to a drill, just slap it all over, wait for a bit then wash it off with running water.

I measured mine to be 72mm, not sure if most are this or not. Probably best checking once you've stripped down.

If yours measured 72mm on your 182 then I'd imagine they'd all be 72mm on the 1*2's.

72mm is for vented discs. 62mm is for single plate discs. Slider pins are an absolute must.

I would be very surprised if you have non vented discs on the front, Rears yes

Do you really need sliders? I've never had to replace sliders on any of my 1*2 calipers. It's quite the opposite of a must! Just clean them up, chuck some lube on and put a new seal kit in. Jobs a goodun. When you take the piston out if it's ratty then replace it but some light scoring doesn't do any harm.

Be very careful of the bleed nipple as they snap easily. Clean up the area around it, drench it in penetrating fluid and then tap it with a hammer. Hopefully that will break the corrosion up to let you get it out. I replaced my bleed nipples with stainless ones. A coat of hammerite will see you fine.

One tip on the piston dust cover. Put the seal over the piston but with the part which sits into the caliper hanging off the back of the piston. Then put the lip into the groove of the caliper and push the piston back into the caliper. Easy peasy.

This is exactly why I ordered new ones.

It's better to have them and not need them.

I suspect my slider pin(s) to have seized up as one of my calipers is binding slightly.

You want the 7mm bleed nipples , like these . They're a little bit longer than the original bleed nipples and fit both front and rear calipers

You need an 8mm spanner for them . But they're the M7 x 1.00 nipples , that's for the HEL ones .

Its 13 quid well spent imo . Normal bleed nipples can shear off easily if they're stuck . Better going with stainless .

I'm also looking at doing a set of calipers I have. I'm gonna strip them and throw them in the engine parts washer and degrease them tonight in work. Are the stainless bleed nipples above correct for replacement of my old ones if I need them?

Brakeparts are currently out of seal kits for 3-4 weeks unless I fancy paying £20 for an express order- which I do not funnily enough.

Can you recommend where to get the front brake hoses? Just looking for standard, no braided lines or any of that.

There are Pagid ones on carparts4less and Mister Auto list quite a few but lengths seem to vary somewhat so not sure what to go for.

Probably Renault Parts Direct or Renault Wolverhampton.

Not really looked into standard lines tbh.

Euro car parts only list one front hose for both of my 172's, one standard and the others a cup for reference @Patrick Bateman. I've used the rear pagid hoses before and they've been fine

Recon units from bigg red are £100 a piece from memory, no idea about brand new though I'm afraid
