Performance ugrades, tubro or bike carbs ?

  Clio RS 200
Hi guys,

I'm pretty new to this and don't really have a great knowledge on cars when it comes to the engine,
was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on pitting bikes carbs in my car instead of a turbo. I've heard that they can give you the same performance output as a turbo but without the lag ??

My cars a 62plate Clio RS200

Any feedback would be great, thanks.

ATM, its used just to take me to and from work and then just out with the mates and that, planning on taking it on track days soon. Budget is £5k but don't mind spending more as I don't plan on selling it any time soon.

In truth, I'd take it out on track exactly as it is, then start tweaking it to your driving style by spending money in the following order;

- tyres (decent track focused ones I.e. AD08r it R888 etc)
- brakes (upgrade to decent pads and discs)
- handling (coilovers, geo set up, solid top mounts / strut bracing, the list for suspension modifications is endless).
- driver tuition
- LSD
- Cage / seats / harnesses / strip it off weight

Only then would I be going down the power route....

/\ he's not wrong tbf.

I went round the outside of a Boxter S coming out of Goodwood @ Thruxton in an old rover 200. Had the thing on its door handles & was lapping much faster, should have seen the owners face. (proper all the gear job)

Moral of the story is power doesn't = laptimes necessarily. No point having all the grunt if you can't use it effectively.

That is one thing I must say, I don't really fancy ripping out seats. I still want the car to be practical, as I will be still using the car for everyday things. I do understand what you mean though.

As above, but for ease, buy a cheap Megane 225 and put the lot in there.

I was thinking this originally, but was thinking if I buy a second hand engine who's to say that it hasn't been ragged about ?? At least if I use the exciting engine I at least know how its been driven.

Bike carbs work great on old pre cat engines as a cheap alternative to carbs. They are usually variable venturi and seem to be easier to get running well than the faff of emulsion tubes and progression holes on webers. Put some on an otherwise standard 1.6 CVH after running twin 40 dcnf's and it went really really well. They are no replacement for a good injection system and are definitely not a match for a turbo conversion.

This is all that is needed. And you would be suprised what it can out perform with a bit of driver tution.

For instance fcs a few weeks back there was a 200 cup racer (yep proper driver and a few trick bits). But nothing could get near it the cornering grip was massive and was constantly out dragging everything out the bends.

Power is good for 1/4mile ,track action handling wins everytime.

My car does have the cup chassis on it with the bigger brakes, are these good enough ?? or would you change these ??

The cup chassis makes no difference to the brakes except for the paint colour.

Use it on track first, then see if it needs improvement.

as above, the best thing you can do is take it on track as it is stock standard and firstly see if you enjoy track (no for everyone, even people who think they'd love it don't necessarily do so) and secondly as soon as you get the hang of it you'll instantly begin to notice the areas where the car needs improving.

and as many have mentioned when it comes to trackdays power is the least effective modification to a standard chassis

this is taken from personal experience as well, I had a mk1 turbo with 300bhp I started using on track, utterly useless in real terms it was as the chassis wasn't setup well enough to handle it. don't get me wrong it was a giggle and still is on the road but for outright performance on a trackday the standard F4R powered mk1 I have now is far more capable as I've spent money on the chassis, not the engine.

Break the mould. Take one on track and Improve your driving skills until your using everything the car has to give. Then screw around modding it. You'll have more money for more track days. You could actually heed the advice in the briefing on the day and build up slowly maybe after having some tuition instead of destroying a set of tyres in the morning session trying to make a point that you and your car are fast. When in reality no-one cares and the instructors are having a good snigger at you when a Marshall gives them a heads up to check out this numptie :p
