Ph1 172 engine whining

  S3, HD Nightster
Hi guys, I've had my 172 for just over a month now and it's been making the same engine noise since I've had it. Please check out this short youtube vid!

A whining sort of noise, proportionate to engine speed. I'm guessing along the lines of the aux belt/tensioners but I'm looking for more opinion's before it goes into a garage. I've been led to believe that this problem is'nt uncommon. Anyone experienced this kind of noise before?

Thanks in advance!

As said, it's an idler bearing thingy lol. Happened to my clio, the part itself costs about £40-£50 but it's going to cost a fair bit in labour as it's an engine out job.

*Edit* Found the receipt for my bearing, £53.87 for the part. That was a year ago though.

Idler bearing.

£60 from renault

If you know what you are doing it can be replaced by forcing the old one away from the accessory belt, replace and pull the belt back on again.

This requires some strength but I've seen Mike@Rentech do it

its not an engine out job, you just need a very thin ratchet/socket combo or a swan neck spanner, undo the 13mm bolt and it'll come off, then youve got to struggle with it to get the belt back on, its possible if you've done them before, i fitted mine in my lunch, with time to go and get a coffee after, that was a 30min lunch too.
