PH1 172 Flame Red....2nd time round.

Ok, fitted the slam panel seal (its PH2 width, from the group buy, so not all the way across like the original, hopefully keep the aluminium in good order (it's cleaned, not painted).

More interestingly, I bought a new throttle cable and this got me looking at the adjustment of the old one, I found I was only getting about 70% travel on the throttle body. So I adjusted the old one for now as it was on the end notch. Oh my ! she flies now :) If you have a Ph1, please check you are getting 100% throttle, you might be missing out on some WOT action !

I made this exact mistake. Except when i put my foot down the clip would slip and let the adjuster move.

Easy fix though i just squeezed it up woth some pliers and added another clip. Does not move at all now :)

Jonathan, I followed your lead on the 'de trim' with my PH1 wheel, was very easy as you say and looks much better. Great initiative!

Ok, so long since an update. Lots done so thought I would post

New front shocks from Renault, seemed fine even after all this time but seemed the right thing to do having changed the rears.

New thermostat. Just for reference here is my needle position and ECU reading at 96 degrees. (Warm map becomes active with ecu reading above 75 degrees, fan comes in at 96 degrees).

MOT came round and shocker, first time in 13 years something amiss ! emissions

null_zps147beb67.jpg

Checked the lambda input, bugger all and one stored fault.

Lambda replacement could make for a seperate thread on its own ! but long story short it was a pin pushed out of the car side lambda connector.

null_zpsaeaefcd7.jpg

The culprit, pin for the green wire had lost its latch and would always push out.

When I finally saw this, I was a happy man.

Summer comes and another fault, no air con. New pressure sensor and a top up of gas, all chilly again.

Pressure sensor goes here, under the air filter, its on a valve so no loss of gas when swapping.

Oh and finally, probably the only interesting bit of this post, some new wheels are nearly ready.

I wanted them for a very long time, I looked for a long time, it took blood sweat and tears, a lot of chasing and effort but god damn, I got them. some wheels just like the ones I already have (only bigger). The real deal, Renault OE part, I cant tell you how much I wanted a set of these.

Ok, its just a wheel but having waited and searched so long to get these it almost feels wrong to put them on the car :)

One of the two boxed brand new ones I have, others (as below after repair) at the body shop.

A nice man at Renault UK got me the paint code from the OZ factory in Italy, lest see how they turn out !

Very nice!

As much as I'd love to just bum flame red, I find it hard to pick a favourite colour, a mint Ph1 is a gorgeous machine!

Those 16's your after have lost their popularity lately, so you may find a set at a good price.

There's also a member on here that offers some really nice wheel re-trims (not sure if you're interested).

It's a great colour for the ph1, no doubt (but it does need to be lower) ;)

As Jonathan has said they are different type of F1s rob, there is a lot on the normal OZ wheels kicking about, but there must be only about 3 or 4 sets of the genuine ones.

It looks stunning in this photo, ph1s look so good in flame red, I always wanted one but many moons ago when I was 19 but I couldn't find one :(

Thanks for the paint code for the wheels jonathon :approve: Yours is going to look superb on silver 16s. Great job on the seats as well with that touch up paint did you get it off eBay?

Cheers, no problem for the code, looking forward to see how they turn out ! I hope it can pull off the 16's height wise as its on sportlines ?

The touch up for the seat was direct from http://www.liquidleather.com/scuffs.htm (colour ref 'Clio 2000 d/blue.' on their database)

Ok, getting closer, all painted up. No joy with the paint code, nobody could mix it but happy with the match. I have a set of PS3's ready to go on so nearly there.

They look great chap.
Yup they do

Cheers ! Tyres on now, should be on the car soon....

Wanted to get some suspension work done first. New style top mounts and bearings prompted by a scraping sound, and new inner / outer arb bushes prompted by some squeaking.

Found the culprit for the grinding, a very knackered seized top mount bearing in the offside, I suppose if I had stripped them first I could have just changed one top bearing for peanuts but at least it is all new and the revised design.

Pleased to say the car is now silent on the speedbumps thanks to the arb bushes.

The wheels look amazing Jonathon  Can't wait for mine to be done in 2weeks after seeing these.

Cheers, well there on now ! inbetween the rain showers. I love them but got to say the switch back to silver is going to take a bit of getting used to,totally changes the look and character of the car.

Jonathan having sold these new when they came out it's nice to see a flamer in OEM condition. Great looking car.

Cheers !

Yeah I no what you mean I've had mine black for the last 2yr but after seeing yours silver I really can't wait to have mine done.

It looks so good in that picture

Thanks for all the comments.

Got the chance to actually give it a run on them last night. Wasn't sure about how it would change the car, the slight increase in rolling radius, the extra weight, whether to go for 205's or 195's ? (they're 205's). Anyway I had convinced myself I would be disappointed but not a bit of it, couldn't really notice much difference (except a bit more grip, possibly the PS3's over the exalto's or the width ?), still an absolute blast.

Pic from the run out.

I had always wanted a steering wheel re trim (having stripped off the crumbling leather from my original wheel a good while back), finally decided to get it done.

There was always one thing nagging me about the PH1 re trims I had seen though, the colour. I hadn't seen a single one where it looked right, the PH1 interior being such a strange colour.

Having thought about this for a while, the plan was hatched. Buy a rear seat from a PH1 172 , reclaim the material and use it to trim the wheel. Leather for the bottom and Alcantara for the rim. This idea partly came from seeing the original 172 press cars back in late 1999 had suede / Alcantara trimmed wheel. The picture is from the 1st Dec 1999 copy of Autocar, this was pretty much the first news to hit about the existence of the car.

So I bought the seat cover from sheff01 who kindly stripped it off and posted it to me along with a free steering wheel, what a top bloke

Stripping the fabric down it felt a bit wrong ripping a mint seat cover to pieces, however most end up in the bin I would imagine so at least part of this one will live on.

So I was left with the pieces, I had the leather for the wheel bottom, (it is actually real leather !) and several Alcantara panels. The Alcantara looked mint (was from the seat back, not bottom !) but looking on the Alcantara website you can machine wash it, so in it went for a wash to freshen it up.

Only one person for the job having seen all his quality work on here, so off it went to Snappy.

The Alcantara panels are not big enough to do the rim in one piece but I think the joins add a nice detail to the rim which is a bit plain otherwise, decided I didn't want a band at the top. To say I'm blown away with the end result is an understatement. I'm not going to pretend the PH1 wheel is the prettiest thing but I wanted to keep the standard look and it feels great in the hand.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Next finishing touch I have in mind is repairing the original drivers side floor mat as the other mats are in great almost like new condition.

A bit like the steering wheel getting replacement mats in the right colour is impossible. The ones I have currently are just ok. With that in mind does anybody have a old original mat in good condition ? passenger side or rear strip are ok. The plan is to make a heel pad from the donor mat to cover the hole in the original drivers side mat.

I may have to copie this as its such a nice touch to the car. :approve:

Can only echo the above, the best PH1 wheel retrim I've seen very OEM. Snappys work is as always flawless, very talented chap.

I can't help thinking that gloss black grab handles and heater surround would transform that interior
